Flu! - Lombard,IL

My son has had the flu now going on a week. Should I take him to the doctor...is there anything that they could even do for him...or do I just have to let it run its course. I am not worried about dehydration issues right now.

What can I do next?

I also suggest calling the office and ask their advise. What can happen is that when ones immunity is compromised with the flu the body is less able to shrug off other bugs. One can start with the flu and end up with pneumonia.

If he doesn't have new symptoms, I would not be concerned. The flu is a virus and has to just run it's course. But for your peace of mind I'd call the doctor and ask them.

how do you know it's the flu? There are viruses which mimic it, & as other posters have mentioned.....you also want to make sure your child is not dehydrated! Normally, our dr uses Tamiflu for the actual flu. :)

Last week, I went to the dr. I was treated for strep & tested for flu. Final dx: strep + a virus which mimics flu. It was the worst illness I've ever had. I was shaking with the chills so badly that the dogs would not come into the bedroom.....all because I was shaking the bed so hard that they were scared! And then I became dehydrated & the illness lasted much longer than it should have. Totally sucked!

Anyway, unfortunately, all of this meant shutting down my daycare for 2 days. On the day the kids were scheduled to return, all 4 kids were sick with the virus I had. Bummer for all of us! It's one week later & we all sound horrible. Feel somewhat okay, but sound gross.....

Actually you should call immediately when they get the flu. That way if Tamiflu is indicated (younger kids, children with respiratory issues, some other risks of flu complications) it can be prescribed right away. At this point - yes you should call, just in case it is not the flu.

How do you know he has the Flu? He has not seen a Doctor yet.

What are his symptoms?

How old is he?

Does the doctor's office have a nurse or doctor's assistant? I would just call the office, give details about the flu symptoms, and ask. It can't hurt to make a call.

Call your pediatrician's office and ask to speak to a nurse. Get their advice. They can tell you based on his exact symptoms whether or not you need to get him in.

Is it a stomach virus? Influnenza is actually respiratory. If it is a stomach virus and he is having just diarhhea then he should be on a BRAT diet....bananas, rice, applesauce and toast.....no dairy. If he is vomiting...call the doc. If it is respiratory then you could check about Tamiflu.
