Fleas - BAD!
My groomer just called saying our dog has fleas very badly. He's needed to be outside the last few months due to him getting old and not being in control of his functions. I just treated him 2 weeks ago... what should I do now?!
So What Happened?™
Thank you for all your helpful responses. I had been treating Atticus with K9 Advantix but missed a couple applications. Guess I've had alot on my plate this year..... HA!
After his two groomer baths I found Bayer Complete Insect Killer, used the granular form all over the yard. Even under the deck. Also threw away his old dog pillow, etc. This morning I brushed him and only found one live flea. YIPPIE!

Yes you must treat everything, the yard (often) his pen, blankets, the kids rooms and the rest of the house-in and out. You might want to call a service like terminix-they treat all "bugs" and then if something keeps coming back they generally don't charge much if any at all. We fought fleas one summer and they kept coming back and treated the whole house in and out and the garage too. (Even though the dog never was in the gargage) the point is one little flea can hide and stay alive when you think it is done. Get a flea comb for the dog and use it too. it works on cats if you need to do them too.

Comfortis. it's a pill you need an rx from the vet for, and not cheap, but it has really worked for us. We had so many problems with fleas last year, but it kills them like within 24 hours or something and lasts a month. I think I will be using it in warm weather from now on.

Get frontline from your vet that is all I use. If youir dog has them that bad you may need to treat him for tapeworms they get them from fleas you can just take a sample to your vet to check

We have two dogs and a cat (down from three dogs and two cats) and we have been fighting fleas for MONTHS! We've used Frontline and K9 Advantage, bathing every week, etc. I described our plight to the vet and she said to spray UNDER the bed and couch, along the walls, wash every rug and place they sleep, etc. Fleas go to darker, less traveled spots not in the middle of the room. She also recommended we treat our yard. When they are bad, just treating the pet doesn't finish the job. She told us to do all of this one week and then again two weeks later. We kind of "half-did" the second time and the pets still have fleas. I'm hoping for a hard freeze soon! I may call an exterminator, too! (We don't see them often, but the dogs are constantly scratching and we do see a couple when we bathe them--maddening!)

use frontline.. it is the best and works for months once you get rid of them. You can purchase it on ebay a lot cheaper than the vet. We only use frontline for our cat as the cheaper off brands and other stuff similar doesn't work as long.

We have 2 dogs one has a bad flea problem this year. We bought the Walmart flea treatment and nothing, so after she scratched most of the hair off her back I took her to the vet who gave me several things, but told me the flea treatment they have is the best, it was, it took care of it without using the other products we got at the vet. Soooo if I were you I would go to a local vet and ask for one treatment of Advantage (what worked for us), my vet sells individual treatments so I'm assuming all vets sell them this way. I'd think one treatment would be all you need until nature takes care of the problem with colder weather.

D.,
I think that it would be best if you took your dog to the vet to discuss the flea situatuon and find out why the treatment didn't work. Also, if your dog is old, is not well and his/her quality of life is poor (having to stay outside in inclement weather, especially w winter coming) you may want to consider finding a new home for him/her or if the quality of life is very very poor discussing putting the poor dog down w/ a trusted and compassionate vet. If your dog is fine and putting down would just be "convenient" then it wouldn't be ethical so finding another home would be best).

Get him treated again, and get your yard treated before you put him back in it. You can put down Ortho-Max (from Lowe's or Home Depot) with a spreader before it rains, and all the bugs will die.
Also, I suggest using a monthly topical flea treatment like Frontline or K-9 Advantage. You just put it between his shoulderblades and the fleas will stay away. They also keep away ticks and mosquitoes. Mosquitoes can carry heartworm...so this is a great thing!
Finally, check your house. You may have them in there and not know it. It's easy to bring them in...they jump onto you when you walk in the grass. An easy way to find out is to walk across your carpet with white socks on. They are attracted to white and will hop on. If you have fleas in your house, you'll have to have your house treated as well. You can have a professional do this, or do it yourself with "flea bombs" purchased at Lowes or Home Depot. Just plan on being out of the house for the whole day.
Good luck!!!
