Flavoring for Alimentum Formula to Make It Taste Better?

Hi there I have a 5 almost 6 month old baby who drinks Alimentum formula, it seemed when she was younger she would drink it fine but now that she is older it she acts as if she does not like it, and we have a hard time getting her to drink her bottle. We tried the vanilla drops but no luck, she did not like that at all. I need ideas on what I can put in the bottle to make the taste more appealing to her? Does anyone know or has anyone else found anything good tasting to flavor their babies allergenic formulas?

Funny thing is my older daughter drank the same formula and loved it we never had a problem with her drinking it. When it came time to switch her to rice milk she did not want to give up her Alimentum formula, lol.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi there. I had the same problem with Nutramigen (a different elemental formula). Elemental formuals taste horrible! I found that if I warmed the bottle, I had more success. My son eventually got used to it, and he adjusted. But it took some time. She will take it eventually. Try warming it up. Also, if she isn't allergic to soy formula, adding a scoop of that in also helps. I tried both of those things and eventually had success. She will adjust, it just takes time. Good luck!

Sounds like her taste buds are developing and she just does not like it! Perhaps your Dr. can suggest another option.

Mix baby food with it. Try applesauce or bananas.

Check w/ her doc to be on the safe side but mine had me use a little sugar or Kayro Syrup (1/2 tsp. per 4 oz.) This was with regular formula though.

Have you tried Nutrimigen?

Avoid vanilla drops because of the sugar and alcohol content in them.

Adding riceceral and a pureed fruit to her diet may help as well as far as nutrition wise.

well, after three kids I can say that she will eat when she is hungry. I have been through the ringer and have even resorted to buying a boob bottle to try to appeal to my daughters. But, what I have learned is to just go with the flow. She may be slowing down on the feeding because you have introduced solids or she could be teething. You can always take her to the dr for a weight check to make sure that she is not loosing. Are her fontennels or eyes sunken? Does she have tears and wet tongue? Wet diapers? If I can remember right, they only need 24-32 ounces.. My girls never even drank a full bottle at a time until like 1 years old. Good luck...

Maybe add a little flavored cereal to it. Like banana rice cereal or fruit cereal.

It could just be that with the hotter wheather she doesn't feel like drinking formula. I personally wouldn't force it if she is eatting well otherwise. If she isn'e eating well, perhaps raspberry or butterscotch extract. (I don't know thogh, as those tend to be a bit strong.) maybe even make it a little weaker... like 3 scoops for 8 oz instead of 4. BUT~ if you do, remember that nutrition wise, it only counts as 6oz of formula and 2 oz of water.

Hi J.,

My daughter was on this and ohhhh how Yucky it was. I tried everything to flavor it. Nothing worked and then one day I added some Pineapple juice from a can of pineapple I had and Presto!!!

Now I know we are not supposed to give our babies juice but it was either that or starve/get gas. I wound up buying Dole Pineapple/Orange 100% juice and just 2 oz did the trick in a 6 oz bottle.

Good luck,
H.

My baby had the same problem!! We switched to Good Start formula, believe it or not, and he did just fine! But then after starting solid foods he decided he didn't like the taste of that formula either and we had to add banana baby food and finely ground oatmeal to his bottles (enlarging the nipple hole). It was scary at first - in the first few months he got so dehydrated from refusing to eat that on several occasions I almost took him into the ER. For him it was all an issue of taste!! In response to the mother who said that your baby will eat when she needs to, based on her personal experience, I'd like to warn that I've had two babies who needed medical intervention because of not eating properly, and older children whose health was affected because they were picky eaters. It can be downright dangerous to always assume a baby will eat as much as he/she needs. Oh, vanilla extract is another idea, but it will still need an additional sweetener of some kind.
