My daughter has wanted to get blue highlights in her dark brown hair forever, and now that she's 18 we said okay. Well, she and a friend did some research, and first bleached her hair, then put in the dark blue color. Well ... the highlights are light green now. She finished after I went to bed, so I hope she didn't cry herself to sleep.
Any ideas on fixing this? I'm hoping there is a solution a bit cheaper than going to the salon to have it fixed ... reminds me of that new commercial just out "We fix $5 haircuts"!

Well, it turns out my daughter was not too upset about the green streaks in her hair, but did want to try and get them fixed. She bought some more blue, and this time just put it all over her hair, figuring it wouldn't show up on her dark hair. She was right, and now the highlights are a medium turquoise. She is very happy with it. Thanks to those who suggested leaving the color in for a couple of hours ... that seems to have worked! I appreciate the quick advice.
Try blue Kool-Aid. Just let a concentrated solution of it sit on all of her hair for maybe 20 minutes. It'll give a light bluish tint to the brown parts, but shouldn't be too noticeable. Or she can do it the hard way and apply it to only the bleached parts.
She'll probably have to re-do it in a couple of weeks.
Listen to Chris W.! I have the dark brown hair that I was born with now but it was a lovely manic panic purple in high school. We did have to bleach, the dye did have to sit forever and is extremely permenant! The first time we made my friends hair purple she had purple hands and we had purple feet to match for weeks because her mom made us do it outside with the hose. So use gloves.

Also a side note about being an empty nester. You may want to give some thought to fostering animals. Many shelters have animals that need socialization and other special care before being adopted. They often require lots of love, doating attention, and trust building to help them through a difficult time of adjustment. In short they need the nurting support of a mother. Many of the foster families we have helping us at the shelter where I volenteer are empty nesters, they say it helps ease the transition, it makes them feel good, and a few have even lost weight!
Well the one thing ive learned the hard way is that even though u pay a bit morefor the salon to do ur hair its going to turn out much better than doing it urself she will probly have to bleach out the color which will fry it i would break down and take her to have it done profesdionally i just did pink highliyes the bleach and thecolorcost me a totalof 70$ it serms like alot but well worth it to not fry ur hair doing it urself i know it sound crazy but ive alwaysloveddifferent im 28 but its what i like when i was 18 i trid to bleach the red out of my hair and it was a mess i had no choicebut to go to the salon the next day my hair was rainbow
What kind of product did she use on her hair? The name is what I'm looking for. The reason I ask is depending on what she used could be the source of the problem. Also what bleaching product did she use? Did she follow the directions for the bleach? Also on the blue color she may not have left it on long enough. On some products it says only 20 mins but to get a better color it is best to leave it on as long as possible.
I use manic panic and color my hair quite often. I also do it myself. I also use their bleach product. For my dark brown hair I really have to leave it on for a while to get it light enough to have the color show true. I have been known to leave the color on for several hours to get it dark and bright enough.
So she might want to try putting on more of the blue and leaving it longer. Though some of the color products even if left on longer might not fix the color. I found the RAW products to be bad on showing true color and wash out faster than other products.
I died my ashy brown hair blue a few months ago, so I can tell you from recent experience that the response from Chris W. is the way to go. You will need to remember though that the "unnatural" colors are not permanent and will fade after some washings and will turn green again. My greys stayed green for about 3 months. Good luck.
Trying to fix do-it-yourself color mistakes can often result in making it worse. Take her to a salon.
Check your yellow pages to see if there is a cosmetology school nearby. Often their salons are much less expensive because the work is done by students under close supervision from their instructors. I get my hair done at a local Aveda school and it's $10 for a cut and $35 for color.
Well, you do have a problem. Being a cosmetologist myself and remembering from the color wheel, that yellow and blue make green, my guess is that when they bleached it out they didn't take it all the way down to white. You'll probably have to strip the color out then re-bleach to white before you put the blue back in, if she still wants blue. But, I would consult a color expert before doing anything to prevent the hair being any more damaged than it is and it breaking off or falling out. I hope this will be of any help.

Also, I mixed a little with some hair gel for "touch-ups" when the color started to fade. It worked great.
