First Time Mom

It really sounds like teething and I tried orajel bu that did not work for my kids because they licked it off my finger before it got to their gums and then they were angry because of the toungue being numb. I tried teething tablets and they were wonderful. It is an herbal tablet that dissolves rather quickly in their mouths. As for the fever, I just gave tylenol or motrin. I switched to keep their bodies from getting used to one or the other.

Put a washcloth in the freezer. It will soothe his gums. This was the only thing that worked for my girls.

Although he is prob teething, it is unlikely he will actually get a tooth for sometime.Some children teeth as early as a few months, but only a few actually get a tooth before 5 months.Just give him tylenol, and you may also give him a bit of orajel, and or a frozen washcloth to naw on.

My son was teething at 3 months and had one tooth by 4 months and 2 now at six months...so it is possible.

My son started showing signs of teething like yours, but it was not until 5 months that he actually got his first tooth. Some babies have lower pain tollerance than others. Until the tooth is about to break, the frozen things do not work, but if it is a sleeping problem, tylenol once in a while worked, or walking him to sleep! It is hard when he is awake, because he is not quite able to get things in his mouth on his own. The teething tablets just made mine sleepy and the gel made him cry more. But if it does not seem to bother him more than drooling and chewing on his fist, I would not worry about it!!!

My DD teethed like that at 3 months and the first tooth popped through at 5 months.

He probably is teething. I have an 8 month old and he started teething around 3 months too, but the tooth didn't break through until last month. Teething rings are helpful, but a little bit of anbesol works best. You could also let him suck on a wet washcloth.

Hi, you are probably right about your son teething but this is just the beginning of many days/nights of drooling, crying, whining, and just all around bad days. My son started teething at 2 mos old and didn't get his first tooth until he was 11 mos old. I didn't like to give him meds but when it was really bad I gave him Tylenol or Motrin for the pain. The slight fever is normal. The only thing you can do is try to make him comfortable. I usually reserved the meds for the really bad days and at night so we both could get some sleep. I would also give him frozen waffles/bagels to gnaw on but you have to be careful because a few times my son gnawed off a huge chunk. They do sell those little things that hold food now so that the baby can't get big pieces. I don't know what they are called but everyone seems to like them. They have a handle and netting so the baby can hold it but not get big chunks of food. If you put some frozen foods in their it will help sooth the gums. Also, experiment with several teethers. I have noticed that many babies like certain teethers while others don't. My son went through about 10 different ones before we found two that he loved. If your son starts pulling on his ear or rubbing it you should definitely take him to the doctor to rule out an ear infection. You don't want the guilt of letting it get to the point of agony for your baby. I did that and felt horrible for the longest time. I thought he had a cold and I was wrong. You will have good days and bad days so enjoy the good ones. Good luck.

Teething is a possibility. I mentioned that I thought my first was teething to the ped at her 4 month check (on her 4 month birthday) and she pushed it off saying that was much too early and that the signs can surface much early than a tooth is going to actually pop through. Mine wasn't really upset - just lots of drooling and chewing on stuff...including me. Her lower gums seemed hard to me. Sure enough, she woke up the next morning with a little tooth poking through the gums and the next morning the other bottom one was through too. This was very early though. Our dentists says there is a huge difference in when kids get teeth and it's ok - nothing to worry about if early or later. He said the general expection is their age in months minus 6 months - so basically a tooth a month beginning around 6 months. He also suggests that they tend to come in pairs which held true for both of mine.

My husband and I always prefer to avoid meds unless they are really uncomfortable or the problem is interferring with thier sleep - figuring they need to sleep to get well (for times when problem is illness). So I always stuck with the chilled toys or washcloth while they were up and saved the Tylonol for bedtimes when really necessary. We used the gels/lotions sometimes too. They helped offer immediate relief, but didn't last long. So they'd help them fall asleep, but the Tylonol would help them to not wake from pain.

Possible. My two started doing that around that age. I think my daughter was about five months old when she got her first. Don't remember when my son got his first one

oh yeah..your son is teething...my little girl(she is almost 5 months) did the same thing at 3 mths(lasted for three/four weeks)..her ped said he could tell the gums were hard(at her 4 mth visit)but none were breaking through...the two bottom teeth are usually the first to come up..and just now i can start to see them under the gums...the doc told me that just because they are teething, is no indicator of when the teeth will show...could be days or months... i know my son was the same...he would have all the symptoms of teething a month or so before anything showed...by the time they actually sprouted,they wouldnt even bother him anymore...some docs and books will say that any fever during teething is unrelated...but i have known too many women whose kids had fevers during the same time for it to be coincidence!!!if it walks and talks like a duck..ITS A DUCK!! know what i mean??..lol..

I'm with the other mom who said teething takes a lot longer than you would think. My son did cut his first tooth when he was 4 months old which is pretty early & then didn't get any more until he was 6 months old or so. It can be miserable, but try a to soak a washcloth in water & then freeze it, that's what worked best for us in combination with tylenol.

He is probably teething. Teeth can bring on a slight fever and even a diaper rash.

Hi J.. Just hand in there. It does sound like he's teething but it could go on for quite awhile. Give him some Tylenol when you think he is uncomfortable and give him things that he can safely bite. Some people use Oragel but it never worked with my kids. I know that as a mom you just want to make all of his problems go away but there really isn't much you can do for him where teething is concerned. I'm glad that he has a doctor's appt. though, don't be afraid to ask any questions that you have (write them down, it's easy to forget them in the moment). Good luck, it sounds like you are a terific mom.

Teething is a definite possibility, however, don't expect to see any teeth breaking through any time soon. Many infants begin showing signs of teething early on, but you must be patient, teeth do not appear this early (usually). Tylenol can be used when he is in pain. Another thing to do is to keep a teething ring in the fridge or let him chomp on a cool wet wash cloth.

Another thing to be aware of, teething often causes low fevers, crankiness, diaper rashes. Be patient and be ready with the baby book and camera to document when that first tooth finally does make its appearance.

More than likely he is at the beginning stages of teething. My son had all four of his front teeth by the time he was 5 months old. If he uses a pacifier try putting it in the freezer for a few minutes then giving it to him.....he will appreciate the coldness on his gums. Even a wet washcloth will help soothe the pain. I used to use Humphries.......they are little pellets that you put in their formula and they work wonders; no tjust for teething either, but colic as well. You can get them at the pharmacy. I used to get mine at Queen Pharmacy or Smithgalls in Lancaster.

Hya doin! You're right baby-boy is teething.They drool alot and eat family & friens & our pest somtimes (if we happen 2-c-the cat running away from baby)I also put a clean washcloth in the freezer, 2-3 at a time,so when he's chewing on 1 untill its thawed and drooly i get another one.Keep the rotation going,also Childrens tylenol(chewables or liquid)for a fever he may get but also for the pain. I also used grape flavored (baby oragel in the baby section with the babyfood, put it directly on his gums with your finger or Q-tip and dont 4 get his frozen washcloth.This will help for a short while or a long while depending (since every baby is different is all you'll hear the PED say)The other mom is also correct about him possibly gettin diaper rash from the teething.
