First Haircut?

Hi,
My daughter is 20 months old. Her hair has grown long and become a little unmanageable. I'd like to take her in for a haircut but am concerned that she's too young and won't sit still. If you have older kids, how old were they when you took them in for their first haircut? How did it go? I've trimmed her bangs at home but a full haircut is more than I can handle.

What can I do next?

My two year old daughter was born with so much hair we took her for her first haircut at 6 months old!! Needless to say, she has had many since then. We go to my own hairdresser and she sits on my lap. For the first cut I brought along a new toy to help keep her still, but she was so facinated with everything else we didn't use it. Even today, the hair clips the sylist uses are the best toys (very colorful). Sometimes she'll get a little squirmy and the cut gets a little uneven, but it's still much better than I could do at home. If you're real concerned about her sitting still, bring along a favorite snack she only gets as a treat. My daughter will sit still and do almost anything for raisins!!

My older daugher was bald as a cue ball until she was 2, but my little one was born with so much hair I couldn't believe it! We had to cut her hair at 3 months to get it out of her eyes. A 20 month old won't be a problem. My little trick is to find some of those mini-m&m's and feed them to her one at a time to keep her looking at you. That will help the stylist out if you can keep her still! Or, go to one of those kids salons. They have these nifty chairs for them to sit in that look like fire trucks or cars or whatever, and most of these places actually have a TV at every station. They'll put on Barney or Elmo (whoever your child's favorite is)- she won't even know her hair is being cut!

My daughter used to love getting her hair cut at that age because they would put little bows and even glitter in her hair - she thought she looked just like a "real" princess!

Good luck and remember your camera!

I always cut our daughter's hair at home till it got to be too much when she turned three. I took her to my hairdresser, not a kiddie salon and she did fine.

I recommend taking her to a kiddie solon if you have one local...and if not then don't worry about it!! You will be amazed how your kids behave for someone else. She will actually hold still!!<grin>

Best of luck with your second one right around the corner...I have two girls 21 months apart, and it is such a joy!!

Good Luck, J.

My sister took her son in at 10m for his first haircut & he LOVED it. Try to find a cool salon with cool kid seats & distractions. My nephew sat on a plane! Good luck!

I took my son for his first haircut just after he turned 1 year. He did great. No tears... lots of smiling. We took him to a kiddie salon just for his first time. From now on I'll probably take him somewhere a bit cheaper (now that I know he can sit still for that length of time). I'm sure your daughter will do just fine.

My daughter is turning one next week and she has already been to Supercuts 4 times. She sits on my lap and the lady gives her things to hold on to. It is not the easiest thing, but it only takes around 10 minutes. There are also Kids cut places that have cartoons and things to entertain older kids.
