First Day of School

My daughters both wore short sets the first day of school. One is in first grade and the other is in third. It is still summer and the weather is still warm.
I see no problem with kids wearing comfortable clothes to school even on the first day. We do not know their schedules and they may have gym that day. If they dress up, they won't be comfortable in gym. That is my opinion. I hope it helps.

As a teacher in an elementary school I can tell you that most kids wear shorts for a lot of September. The only recommendation I'd make is to make sure your son has sneakers and not sandals on in case he has gym class his first day.

shorts for school is fine - my opinion - shorts are better for school than church! why do you care what others think? do what feels right with you and forget what everyone else says.. I have in laws like that and I just don't care if they think badly of me - at least I"m doing right by my kids and they are cared for.. period.

I am an elementary school teacher of 25 years and you can certainly send your son to school in shorts! The more comfortable he is the better his days will be.You should see some of the outfits our kids come in, especially if they pick out their own clothes! Independence is great. Clothes don't matter at all, being an involved parent makes all the difference in your child's school experience.Hope your son has a great year....

Oh, how I can relate to the dress-code comments from the the MIL! Mine almost dropped to the floor when I sent her the picture of my two boys last year on their 1st day of school (they wore shorts and their favorite T-shirt). LOL Oh well, they were clean, well presentable, comfortabe and it was hot that day!

My boys are at an age where they are very choosy as to what they will wear. My youngest (going into 1st grade too) will NOT NOT NOT wear buttons on his shirts! He just won't. And, why should I make him? First day of school is stressful enough...why make it more stressful, right?

Your outfit sounds PERFECT! What's important is that he is comfortable and has a GREAT experience with his 1st day of 1st grade!!

It is absolutley ok for your son to wear shorts the first day of school! I have two kids, one entering 6th grade and another entering kindergaten. When I was little,,,,we always got new clothes at the beginning of the year...and that was it until say Christmas.....now kids don't get a ton of school clothes because parents are buying "all the time through out the year" so wearing something formal the first day is not a big deal...girls dont even wear dresses like they used to! Some do but not a lot. First grade the kids all have "ants in the pants" can't sit still,,the classrooms are hot,,,make your son as comfortable as possible! It is all about making him have a great day!
Oh and I also have "monsters" too!!

I think that sounds absolutely perfect. My son wore a nice polo with khaki shorts his first day. I think it's nice to start the school year looking presentable! I hope he has a great year!

of course! My son is starting his second week of kindergarten and he has worn shorts everyday. He looks nice but more important he is comfortable because it is still so hot! Good luck!

Absolutely! Take it from a mom and teacher- those classrooms get hot and fast when they have 20 little bodies running around! I used to have students that would wear shorts almost into October (Some later). I never thought less of them- more than anything I was jealous I had to be dressed up!

Don't worry about what your family says, follow your gut and the weather report and remember that layering them in the winter is best- they can always take stuff of if they are hot. Some classrooms have hot blowing air that you can't turn off and others can't warm up!

My son is in third grade this year and every year (so far!) he has worn shorts and a collared shirt. I definitely think it is appropriate!

At my son's school most of the kids are wearing shorts and t-shirts.

Shorts and short sleeves are definitely fine for the first day of school. My son entered 1st grade this year and he wore shorts. All of the kids (boys)at our bus stop wore shorts.
