Hi Everyone,

My 8 year old daughter will be making First Communion this year in May. I am tempted to just purchase a dress online. I've looked in Dillard's so far (just passing through the store) and there isn't much available...maybe it's a bit early yet. She is not into dresses at all so I am looking for a simple, satin gown with no frills, lace or anything like that. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go?? Thank you in advance!

J.

I have noticed that JC Penney's usually has a decent selection, but when my daughter needed a First Communion dress, we got it online and had no problems at all. It fit perfectly and was a good quality. I also have a "not into dresses" girl! Good luck!

I was just in Little Amici consignment shop in New Tampa and saw quite a few dresses. You might even try the high end consignment stores.

J.,
my daughter made her communion last year. I ended up buying her dress at a bridle shop for about $45. They had frilly or just plain styles. I purchased a "last season" dress very reasonably priced very basic. (depending on style anywhere from $40 up. Just a thought.

One other place I checked was higher end consignment shops.

I had the same problem. My daughter had her First Communion 24 Jan. 08. I went to all those stores, and believe me, nothing, nothing that is appropriate for this occasion. The only place I found a dress was at the University Mall at Fowler and Bruce B. Downs, by USF. The store is only formal ware for children. They have hundreds of dresses. It is located close to Macys, inside the mall. I know you will find the dress you want. Congratulation to you and your daughter.

Hi J.,
I was lucky enough to have my Mother make my daughter's communion dress a few years ago but when I was looking I also got frustrated I wanted something simple and a little old fashioned but it was impossible to find! I did see a few flower girl dresses though that were very simple and pretty and almost all of them can be ordered in white! I would suggest bridal shops.... Also I would check Strasburg Children they are pricy but have great sales!!!
Good luck in your search.

My daughter made her 1st communion 2 yrs ago and we looked everywhere but didn't find anything she liked. Our Church (St. Timothy's in Lutz) brought in a company that had tons of really nice dresses and veils at very reasonable prices. Is your program going to do that? IF not, call St. Tim's and ask if they are doing it this year or at least call them and find out the name of the people. It was a father/daughter team and they were BUSY at all the churches this time of year so you could find out their schedule and meet up with them some where.

We ended up getting a beautiful dress at Burlington Coat Factory. It was simple with no lace, but had small fabric flowers (like small rosebuds) and pearl beads, it was very classy. It is in the mall by USF but there is also one on 19 over in Clearwater. From where I live they are about the same distance away.

I think now would be an ideal time because easter is coming up as well.

Good luck!

Dear J.,
I am a seamstress. The best bet for you is to have your daughter's dress custom made. Look through the pattern books at either Hancock's Fabreic or JoAnn's Fabric-find the dress you like, on the back of the pattern you will find the information as to how much fabric to buy. Then call me ###-###-####, or e-mail me at ____@____.com. I've been making clothes for 45 years.
God bless you in your efforts.

I'm looking for a flower girl dress for my step-daughter and a bunch of people have recommended gagas.com which rents out kids formal wear. If you weren't planning on hanging on to the dress for sentimental reasons that might be a good place to find one.

Have you looked in Ross or Marshalls over by Gulf Gate? I believe I saw some white communion type dresses in the children's section there last week. I hear the consignment shop in Gulf Gate (Snappy Turtle??) has a great selection as well- haven't made it in there yet though.

Hi J.,
I don't know how much your looking to spend but perhaps you can extend your search out to flower girl dresses. I work at cc's boutique in St. Petersburg. They have 2 brands that I would recommend. US Angels and Wawa by Watters. They both have simple dresses that can be ordered in solid white. www.usangels.com and watters.com you can view the dresses on these websites. Us angels you can receive within 6-8 weeks, so it's not too early to start looking.
Good Luck,
J. (mommy of Justin age 11 months)

Give it a few more weeks, once the Easter dresses start to come in you will see more variety. When I worked at Dillards a few years ago they had a nice selection, because women also want simple white dresses for flower girls.

Hi J.!

Congratulations! Can you believe your little one is old enough for 1st Communion? That's how I felt when my son made his and now my daughter will next year! Can't believe it. We bought his suit at Kohl's Department store, but I don't remember if they had dresses. Where I did find the most beautiful dresses was Nordstrom. I really think I also saw dresses at Sears too. Suits are no where near as fun as dresses! Have fun, good luck and I hope the day is beautiful for you and your little girl!

I don't know how far you are from 49th ST in St Pete but I saw some at a consignment shop called Kiddy Korner on 49th St and like 46th Ave N... they were covered in Plastic. I didnt look at them closely but from where I saw, they were either new or almost new.

Call around before you go wearing out shoe leather!! :)

best wishes,
M.

I'm not sure what Dillards you looked at but, when I was looking for my sons baptism outfit I found that the Dillards at Coconut Point had a much larger selection than the Dillards at Edison and Naples Mall. Not sure why.... I haven't been in there lately but, if your in the neighborhood you might want to pop in there. You might also be surprised that places like JC Penny's usually carry the same ones at Dillards and Macys. I'm not a huge fan of all the frills either but, unfortuneately that seems to be whats out there. Good Luck. I hope your daughters communion is a special day for her and your family.

Hi, I know Burlington Coat Factory in Clearwater had a very nice selection of dresses for a better price than Dillards. They had ones with bead work, frilly, also the tiara's, gloves. We bought my daughters Christening dress there. Sometimes you can even get them on Clearance for a great price. Good luck.

Hi my name is S. and I hope to help you out with your shoping! Have you tried to take her to the out let off of 75 to the kids gap? or how about the limited in the mall? kids don't like Dillards they arn't in style for that age. Also an eight year old needs to try things on so online wouldn't be the way to go. Do you know where the out let mall is? they have great prices and also she could wear nice pants and a top it doesn't have to be a dress. Also what size does she wear this will help me out alot. THanks S.
