Hi,

I'm looking for a pedicatrician in the East Bay (Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Lafayette) who is open to discussing a delayed vaccine schedule. I do think vaccines are important, but don't feel comfortable with the quantity that are given to kids at such a young age.

What can I do next?

We go to Lamorinda Pediatrics in Lafayette and see Dr. Herbert. This office is awesome, but am not sure what their views are on vaccines...we have always done them. The receptionists are great, so I would call and see what they say.

All 3 of my children go to Dr. David Wagner in Pleasant Hill (Muir Pediatrics) ###-###-####. He is a great and attentive doctor. He ended up being our family pediatrician because of my concern with vaccinations. I didn't want to give my children all of the vaccinations, and also used a delayed schedule for the vaccinations that they did receive. The first pediatrician I had was ok with the delayed schedule, but absolutely opposed to me not giving my child all of the recommended immunizations. At the recommendation of the health plan representative I called Dr. Wagner. At the first doctors visit, he listened to my concerns and gave me the pro immunization side but let me be the decision maker as the parent. He has been an awesome doctor to my 3 children.

My pediatrician is Dr. Philip Rush in Pleasant Hill. When my daughter was young I was concerned about overloading her on vaccines as well. I brought this concern to his attention and asked if we could split her shots up. His response was that that was fine, as long as the insurance would allow it. I can't remember whether the insurance accepted that or whether I paid myself, (I think I may have paid myself) but I did split her shots up. I'm not sure how that would translate to DELAYED shots. I still went with the schedule but split them up over a month or two.

We went to her when she was with Primary Care Pediatrics in Oakland and were so sad when she moved to Walnut Creek. We went to her from when my son was born until he was about 2. We were concerned with vaccines and at that time a lot of them still had thimerosal in them. She was completely understanding and she special ordered thimerosal free vaccines for us. She also split up the vaccinations for us. She was also really great about our decision to raise our son vegetarian. I think you should definitely check her out. She's super sweet.

Dr. Lloyd Takao of Summit Pediatrics in Orinda is our ped, and their entire office (4-5 peds) follows a more spread-out vaccination protocol. There are several of the vaccinations on the CDC list that they don't do. What I like is the fact that Dr. T is an old-school conservative-type ped, but is totally on board with a protocol similar to the one advocated by Dr. Sears in his Vaccine Book.

Dr. Philip Rush in Pleasant Hill, ###-###-####. I vaccinate my children, but I know that he's open to a delayed schedule. He's very patient and takes time to answer your questions. He's awesome with both my kids and they really like him. It might take a while before you get an appointment, as he's very busy, but he's worth it.
