So this is weird. My son, about a month ago had high fevers (over 101.1 deg.) for about 9 days. I took him into the pediatrician, and he said to wait it out, because viruses peak out at about the 5th day (I took him in on day 5 of this). This was not related to teething........at least, not from what I could tell (plus the pediatrician said the fevers were too high to be related to teething). Now, for the past 3 days, it seems like he has the same thing as before. He is not responding to the Motrin or Tylenol, and the fevers keep getting more and more severe. I am "pushing" fluids, and this seems to help, for a while, but then the fever rebounds higher than before. I will take him into the pediatrician if I can't get a handle on the fevers, but I am wondering if anyone else has encountered a sickness like this?? Did your doctor draw bloodwork? If so, what were the findings? I am trying to make the best decisions possible for my son, and just wondering if anyone else has been through this. My son has been very healthy, it's just around this time (11 months & 12 months) that he's been sick.

What can I do next?

Is he lathargic as well? When my oldest was 9 months she came down with roseolla. The only way to know is after a long stretch of fevers loss of appetite and extremely lathargic behavior they break into a rash. Of course it is a virus so nothing helps. Just a thought because her fevers were around the 100-103 mark consistently.
Hope that helps

My 2nd child is the one we bring into the clinic most often and I guess it concerns me that your doctor didn't do any bloodwork. He has had some strange illnesses and seems to get everything. I would request bloodwork be done to see what his WBC level is at. I would bring up the concern with your doctor too. If he/she is not responsive, I'd find a new doc. At this age they can't tell you what's wrong and I feel like the doctor should be ruling out everything before saying it is a virus.

Go to the doctor and ask for white blood cell count, if he isnt responding to the meds with his fever its not viral, there is something bacterial going on in his body and the fever is an indiction his body is trying to fight it. Take him to urgent care if you have to and insist on it. I had a doctor give me the "virus" diagnosis too and by the time I went to a different one my daughter had a full blown kidney infection and white blood cell count at 30,000.

Does your child have teeth yet? My daughter had at least 100-101 fever with diarrhea when she would teeth, so the fever can get high. Had the little one had a recent immunization after appearance of the first fever??? Also have the bowels or poops changed alot since the fever. Some children can get intestinal stuff and run fevers. Poop will tell you alot about what is going on in the body! I would definitely recommend having a CBC which will give a picture of what the red and white blood cells are doing? High white blood cells suggest bacteria and low white blood cells most often suggest virus. There are always variances depending on condition. If it is a virus, antibiotics won't help. Some suggestions to help boost your childs immune system would be probiotics which are the good bugs that are found in your gut which fight bacteria/viruses. You can get them at a natural food store or at rainbow in the natural refrigerated section. Look for the words L-acidophilus and bifidus.. They come in powder forms so you can add them to food or drinks, just not hot foods. These are safe for any child and they do offer non dairy forms if your child had problems with dairy. Also vit C and zinc also boost the immune system. They do come in liquid and powder forms. Just some suggestions.
