Fever

I am wondering if any mothers have had problems with the 15/18 months shots. My 1 1/2 year old son got shots on a Friday and the following Friday started running a temp. The first reading i got was 103.7 and gave him Tylenol and he had taken a 3 1/2 hour nap. Then i called the express care clinic, took him in, and nothing was wrong with him. It now is Monday and he is still running the fever when the meds run off. I was told to give Tylenol and Motrin every three hours switching up each. Just wondering if it could be from the shots. I remember last year going through this with my 3 year old daughter and it went on for a week. Just looking to see if any other had this occur as it may be from the shots.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We are now over the fever and back to normal. I did confirm with my local clinic that there is a bug going around being 24-48 hours or 4 days. Thanks all for your input.

This happened with my son a few weeks ago, but he hasn't had any shots lately. He's 2 1/2. The fever lasted a little over 24 hours and he complained that his cheeks hurt. That was the only other symptom. It cleared up on its own with Tylenol/Motrin. The Motrin worked better.

Hi Carrie
A week seems to be along time to start to run a fever after shots. usually if you run a fever with shots it is within 24 hours. My son just got over exactly what you are talking about the Dr said it is a virus (which your son could have picked up at the drs while getting his shots) and will run its course it took him a full 7 days to start to fell better. hope your little one feels better soon. Both of my kids got fevers after their shots. I always asked the pediatrician for some tylenol even before the shots were given to help a little.

I worked in a pediatric office for several years. This is normal and actually a good thing. By fighting off the materials in the shots, your child is building his immunity to what he's supposed to.

Did your son get MMR? My doc told me the MMR fever/reaction usually shows up 7-10 days after the shot. My daughter is getting her 15m shots on Thursday and I am armed with Tylenol and Motrin! I hope things are better for you soon!

Carrie,
When my daughter got her first round of MMR, chicken pox and whatever else at 12months, she ran a fever...but not for about 8 days after the shots. She also got a rash from the shots (not sure if was a fever rash or chicken pox (both happen). Just keep an eye on him and if it spikes high again or doesn't seem to go away within a couple days, then I'd call.

I have to say, I agree with Miranda, vaccines can be alot more dangerous than Dr.'s like to tell us. Of course they are probably told the vaccines are fine and safe too, so they aren't try to hide anything from you. There are many "possible" issues/illnesses that occur sometimes with vaccines the main concern being the presence of thimerosal (containing mercury). Here is a website where you can see the actual amount of thimerosal in common vaccines: http://www.fda.gov/cber/vaccine/thimerosal.htm#t3

Now, I'm not saying a kid should get NO vaccines, although I know some people do believe that, but my choice with my son was to pick and choose the shots I thought were the most important, (such as Hep B, small pox, Measles) and give them 1 shot at a time. I've never allowed my son to have more than 1 shot at a DR. appt. I've heard too many stories like yours of children getting very sick after vaccinations or even showing autism signs and other severe reactions, IMMEDIATELY after recieving their shots. These can't ALL be coincidence.

Did you know that vaccines are one of the LEAST tested medical products? Anyways, it is a hard choice to decide what to do. Risk your child to known dangerous diseases by not vaccinating? Or risk all the unknown chemicals in the vaccines that have been "possibly" connected to autism and definitely connected to a huge increase in the amount of mercury in our children?

The FDA has ordered Thimerosal to be removed from all new shots being made in the U.S. and by now, most shots should be Thimerosal free, so the risk is less. And for every parent, the vaccination choice is a personal choice. I would never tell anyone they shouldn't vaccinate, I mean, these are a lot of dangerous diseases we are trying to prevent! And I was vaccinated as a child and I believe I'm okay :)

But we are exposing our children to even more vaccines now than then, and health issues are increasing. All I can say is, maybe next time, limit the number of shots given at one time, or get a certain vaccine in a single shot, instead of in one shot with multiple vaccinations in it. These multi-vaccines seem to cause more problems. Even if it means making a few extra appts to get all the shots you want, maybe it would be easier on your childs immune system to get one at a time.

I can't give you any advice on the fever, as my 3 1/2 year old has never had one, but I hope your son feels better soon. It could very well be unrelated to the shot, or he could be having a common reaction.

I really hope this didn't sound too preachy, and I truly believe every parent should make their own choice in an educated manner, whichever way they go. I wish you and your son the best.

Carrie,

Fever and swelling at the sight are typical, but I have never seen it last a week. Most likely, your child picked up a virus before the shots or at the doctor's office. If it has been a full week and he is still running a fever, I would call the nurse at your doctor's office again.

Good luck,
S.

I would say that the fever isn't from the shots. It would have showed up before a weeks time. I would say your son has some sort of viral infection. Those can take up to 10 days to break a temp. If it lasts longer than 10 days, I would go back to the doctor.

My boys occasionally got feveral after shots, but a couple of times when it lasted my pediatrician told me that sometimes the shots make them susceptible to other viruses, so it's possible that your son picked up something else when his immune system was compromised--especially at the "germ pit" they call a doctor's waiting room. :)

My son responded that way to some of his shots. Keep doing what they told you to do with the Tylenol and Motrin, but also check his temp about one hour into each dose. If the fever is not coming down with one medication or the other, call your clinic again. Sometimes one works better than the other, but they want you to alternate so you don't accidentally overdose on either one. Keep a written list of which medicine you gave,, when you gave it, and how much.

You said your son's fever didn't start until a week had passed though, so I wonder if it is not connected to the shots at all. My son's fever started within a few hours of receiving the shots...

Carrie, I too had that problem when my daughter was that young, she's 6 now. But it landed us in the hospital for 2 days. The swicth off of Tylenol and Motrin works well. But if it contunies I would get to a doctor. I just wanted to let you know your not the only one with that problem. My daughter is due for more shots this year and I'm hopeing it won't happen again. Good luck!

http://www.nvic.org/Default.htm I would highly suggest starting here. there is alot of information about vaccines. I regret ever vaccinating my 2 older children and will NEVER vaccinate my youngest. My middle daughter is on the Autism spectrum from her 15 month shots. we have not gotten a definate diaghnoses yet as my doctors are toying around and giving more excuses why NOT to get her tested than trying to help me get my daughter the help she needs. She was a fine happy healthy 15 month old. Ahead for development. She developed a fever, rash and then was given prednisolone for her rash and completely turned into a different person and has not been the same since. I have gotten more excuses than help and can not switch doctors due to HMOS!!!!! GRRR. Take a look at this site and do the search for yourself. If you think your children may have some reaction to the shot then you should report it. This is NOT NORMAL! These vaccines are NOT designed for our children's bodies. I wish I would have known that before I vaccinated my kids. I want my daughter back.

If he had the MMR I don't think that is uncommon. Remember that is a live virus and so it is building his immune system up. Also with my granddaughter, when they gave her the MMR they told us not to take her around any pregnant women for 2 weeks because of the measle part of it. If it is contagious enough to spread to a pregnant woman for up to two weeks, then it surely could cause some fevers and such in the child who had it.

My twins both had fevers and then seizures from their 4 month shots (104-105) and reacted again later on with the DPT. The dr's figured a reaction to the pertussis, we skipped it with the nuxt two kids then the last one had hers and was fine.
BUT one of the twins has autism and some say its becaus eo fthe immunizations. I do remember the nurse said during their check up they had a little infection but nothing that would keep them fro getting their shots well maybe it was the coldsear infections they had who knows. Document really well because when they asked me these questions 10-12 years later I forgot.

yup, more than likely from the shots. My daughter always got a fever for a few days after getting them. Good call taking him to the clinic tho, over 103 is pretty high but if it's managed by the tylenol/motrin, he will be just fine. If he's still running a temp by the time you read this tho, I would give your doc another call.

Carrie,

I am sorry that your little one isn't feeling well. I have heard that there are two "fever viruses" out there right now. One lasts about 7-10 days and the other is about 24-48 hours. The only real symptom is a high fever.

Good luck, hope your little guys is better soon.

My four boys all ran fever with that round of shots. they never had anything before or after that age. I would just keep giving the tylenol until he can go 24 hours without a fever and no meds to help. Good luck

Hi Carrie,

I would personally call a natural path and see what you can do to get the toxins out of his body.

Vacinations have tons of toxins and perservativs in them that are NOT good for the body. Also, chances are that if he is reacting this badly to this round of shots, he has a greater chance of an even more severe reaction in the future....

If you suspect that this is from the shots, your regualar clinic will be of no help. They always deny that kids are reacting to vaccines and blame it on other things. It has been estimated that like 70% of reactions are never reported because doctors refuse to consider that they originated from the vaccinations! And by giving them tylenol and motrin constantly, you may be covering up even more of a severe reaction. Doctors recomend this (in my opinion) so they don't have to deal with problems....

Check out the websites 909shot.com and thinktwice.com
They will give you some more info to think about.

GOOD LUCK and MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Both of my kids ran a high fever exactly a week after the MMR. If it continues, have them check his blood to see if it is bacterial or viral. That is the only way to know for sure that is isn't viral.
