Fertility Issues: Need Advice on Finding an OBGYN in SL Valley

I have been trying to get pregnant for the past fourteen months and have not been able to conceive. I had an OBGYN two years ago, but he quit his practice early last year (plus I didn't like him much), so now I need a new OBGYN. I would prefer a doctor who specializes in infertility, since I apparently am having problems, but I want to make sure he or she is a good doctor, so I am seeking referrals from mothers online in the Salt Lake Valley. Do you have suggestions? I have already tried getting Dr. Larkin at the Murray hospital, but he already has too my patients and they won't accept me if I'm not already pregnant.

I would prefer a good doctor in the West Jordan/Murray/West Valley area, since that is where I live, but I'll be willing to travel if need be.

So What Happened?™

Thanks for all the responses! They were very helpful! After I read all the responses on Mamasource, I found a doctor at the new Murray hospital who was accepting new patients. I had to wait three months to see him, but I used the time wisely and continued to lose weight and exercise more. By the time August came around I had lost 9 pounds total, and my period came on its own after not coming for 8 months.

I saw my new OBGYN doctor in early September. He told me I had a condition called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Basically, PCOVS kept me from losing weight easily, and was making me infertile and pre-diabetic. He put me on Metformin, which helps control blood sugar, and gave me a fertility persription: Clomid. He also told me to go on the South Beach diet to lose more weight.

Four days after my appointment I had my period again, so I was able to go on Clomid a few days later. The South Beach diet was great! I lost 10 pounds in two weeks. I bought an ovulation kit right after my period, and found out I was ovulating right on time. Three weeks later, my period did not come when I was expecting it to, so I took a pregnancy test. POSITIVE!!!! I am now pregnant, 20 pounds lighter, and very happy! :) Thanks!

I love my doctor! She doesn't exactly specialize in infertility but she is an awesome listener. It took us 18 months to get pregnant with our baby. It turns out I have stage 4 endometriosis which can cause infertility and she has really helped me a lot with that. Her name is Melissa Brown and she is located at the IMC in murray. ###-###-####--Everyone in her office is absolutely amazing also.

Hi B.,
I agree with Sherry. Dr. Hatasaka and the rest of the doctors at the U are incredible. It took us 6 YEARS to get our little one here, and they are the group who finally helped us make it happen. I live in Magna, so it was kind of a drive, but it was sooo worth it. Good luck.

You will be astounded at how fast you'll become pregnant if you lose some weight. 80 pounds is nearly considered to be morbidly obese, which also means many serious health issues related to being overweight. My advice for you is to actively work on weight loss; weight watchers is an excellent way to go. Pregnancy is only going to add more weight, and overweight women also have more problems during their pregnancies and deliveries. Give yourself and your future child a gift; work on achieving a healthy weight, and not only will your reproductive cycles become balanced, but so will the rest of your life. It may seem like an overwhelming process, but just start and take it one day at a time, and make sure you have a good program and support group. You'll truly thank yourself for years to come. And yes, the Avenues Women's Center is excellent. All female providers, both nurse practitioners and docs. Dr. Robinson is really excellent. Good luck!

I live in WVC and I really like my doctor, too. He is at the Jordan Valley Hospital in the South Valley Women's Center. His name is Scott Hansen. I am not sure he SPECIALIZES in fertility, but I have discussed it with him because I have a difficult time getting pregnant. (I just have not opted to do any fertility so far). If he doesn't specialize in fertility, I'm sure he can refer you to someone who does--there are several doctors in the same office. His nurse is wonderful, too.
Finding a good doctor is so important. You have to like your doc, or there is no sense going to them. There are plenty of good doctors out there, you just have to find the right one for you.
Good luck!

It seems to me that you ought to start with something really straight forward to kick start your system into ovulating, since it doesn't really sound like you are. Have you ever been on Clomid?

Dr. Stephen Terry at Cottonwood OB/GYN is great and he has done a lot with infertility. I do think he is VERY busy though and I don't know how hard it would be to get into him.

Dr. Russell A. Smith at Alta View is very good. I haven't had issues with infertility, but I worked with him in Short Stay Surgery as he helped other ladies with infertility issue (he is an OBGYN surgeon also). He has delivered my 3 kids and is very caring and understanding as a man can be in these situations. He has his own kids, unlike the female OBGYN there... ###-###-####.

I love the Doctors at the Avenues women's center. Dr. Robinson is mine and she is great with infertility. You would have to see a nurse practitioner at first, but Dr. Robinson would handle your fertility issues. You are probably right with regards to the weight thing. I had fertility issues and saw a specialist at the U (which I would not recommend), but I did refer an overweight friend there. The Dr. took one look at her and said to come back after she lost some weight. It was really harsh, but the truth. She started Weight Watchers and was pregnant within 6 months. Then after her first baby she gained all the weight back and when she started Weight Watchers again, she was immediately pregnant.
If you want a fertility specialist, I would recommend the Reproductive Care Center. I went there for a few months before I got pregnant the first time. They are great! Good Luck!!
