Fenugreek - San Marcos,TX

I have a fairly low milk supply and was thinking about taking fenugreek to increase it. I was wondering if it will increase my supply to the point that I become engorged, as I do not want this to happen. Has anyone tried it and what were the results?

What can I do next?

I took fenugreek regularly and used Mother's Milk tea on occasion. Both helped my supply but I never got engorged. I noticed enough difference with the fenugreek that if I skipped a day or two I could feel that my supply was lower. Staying hydrated is also really important! Good luck.

I, too was thinking the same. I took fenugreek once a day and drank lots and lots of water. I was not engorged. Although, I really think what I ate helped with my milk supply AND how many times you nurse/pump..the more stimulation you make, more milk comes. I ate oatmeal, drank lots of water, and ate soups.

Good luck! Keep it up.

Took it, increased milk supply but not so much that it caused engorgement. I stopped taking it when my supply was back up...and only started to take it again if it dipped (due to a cold or something).

I bought capsules at GNC and took 3 two times a day for a few days each time. I nursed a few times a day and pumped 3 times a day while at work for 9 mos (from time I went back to work when he was 3 mos till he was 12 mos).

Good luck!

I took Fenugreek (6 pills a day) and drank the Mothers Milk tea and no improvement at all (this was when my child was 10 weeks old). I talked with my Dr. and she said that it's just the way my body is. Even when I was nursing/pumping every 3 hours- I could only pump a max of 2 oz and my son wasn't full after nursing. I tried as best I could though.

I tried it and it did not work for me. I took 3 pills a day (per the lactation specialist) and not one change in my supply.
I have to be honest though, after the fenugreek I was prescribed a medication to increase my supply, and still nothing. I followed everything the lactation specialists and Dr's told me, to increase my milk supply and nothing worked.
So maybe it's just me? I have heard fenugreek has helped some people.
Good Luck.

I think there is something that you are supposed to take with it to make sure it works properly, but it has slipped my mind. I used to Mother's Milk Tea and i worked very well. I only had a somewhat engorged feeling the first time I drank it but after that it was fine... also I HATED the way i smelled (like maple sryup) while taking the fenugreek so the tea was a much better option for me and I used that for like 4 months after I went back to work and it always helped my supply. Good Luck!

Fenugreek works better when paired with Blessed Thistle, as well as keeping hydrated and eating oatmeal. Why is you think your supply is low? Pumping is never a safe or prudent way to measure milk production because the machine can only get 1/4 (25%) of what the baby can actually suckle. Also, during growth spurts (every 2-3 months) the baby will cluster feed - feed MANY times within a short time frame and seem unsatisfied - because the baby is priming your body to produce more to keep up with the baby's new demands.

I used it when breastfeeding and no, I was never engorged because of it. It increased my supply (I was also drinking Yogi's Mother's Milk Tea). I didn't notice myself smelling like maple syrup, so maybe I didn't take enough. ???

I was using fenugreek but my baby got super gassy with this, so I changed it with Healthy nursing tea and now I am producing sufficient breast milk with no tummy issues in my baby.

i am so glad i used herbs to increase my milk supply with my 3rd baby and i wish i'd known about them with my first. the great thing about fenugreek is that you take as much as you need to take. if you feel engorged, you take less or increase the number of hours between doses. i did get to a point, as my daughter got older and needed more milk, that the dose of fenugreek i needed to take to stay full enough was making me dizzy. so i switched to More Milk Plus, which is fenugreek and several other herbs. it was much more potent and i enjoyed taking fewer pills to get the results. but it is more costly. so as my daughter began eating solids and breastfeeding less, i switched back to fenugreek to save some money. definitely give it a try and if it doesn't work for you, try a different herb.

I took it, and never was engorged, but it did help. I took 3-4 capsules a day. But, like the other lady said, I smelled like pancakes!! LOL It's not bad. (I can think of worse things to smell like...) But still , be prepared. : )
