Feeding Schedule for 10 Month Old?

Can anyone fill me in on the appropriate daily feeding schedule for a 10 month old baby-- when should I nurse and when feed solids? I am a little confused about it all. I feed my daughter solids three meals per day but how often should I nurse and when? Also when do you do snacks, and do you nurse for snack or do regular food? My daughter is very big for her age (25+lbs) and LOVES to nurse so I'm a little worried about overfeeding her. Thank you so much for any help.

What can I do next?

Hi,
I have a son who is 9 months. He eats 3 solid meals a day too. I always nurse him first before his solid foods. His snack is just breast milk and I do that between his meals consisting of solids. My son loves to nurse and does so about 5-6 times a day. I know it sounds like a lot of nursing, but I believe breast milk is so important and I'm thrilled to be able to do it. I don't think a baby will over feed, but use your instinct. I hope some of this helps.

Don't worry about her size, she will lean out when she starts running around! I feed my little guy 3 meals and 2 snacks a day and nurse on demand, he ends up nursing about 6-7 times. He was a litle chunk but now he's walking and actually on the thinner side. Have fun with your baby!

Breakfast, lunch, dinner: nursing and solids plus one or two additional liquid feedings during the day-one right before her bedtime and any other time that works for you. Here's a sample schedule but it really depends on what she and you are comfy with:
7:00 wake up time
7:00 nurse then breakfast
9-11 nap
11:00 nurse then lunch
1-3 nap
3:00 nurse
5-6 nap (if she still takes an evening catnap)
6:00 nurse then dinner
Bedtime nurse one last time and then get her ready for bed :-)

Hope this helped! Of course you can adjust the times depending on when you usually get her up in the morning.

Here is a great and useful guide I used with both my boys (now 3 & 1 yrs old). It is the best and easiest feeding guide I could find, and I researched A LOT. It not only tells you exactly what to feed by age group, but also exactly how much throughout the course of the day. It is so simple to use!
If the link does not come through, search Google for "babycenter feeding guide". There is an infant to 1yr old feeding guide and a toddler to 3 yrs old guide:

Best wishes!

Hi there,

I am not sure what is appropriate but my daughter is also 10 months so I will share what she does. She also eats 3 meals a day of table food, no baby food anymore. She has about 2 snacks a day too. I nurse her 3 times per day - when she wakes up, noon and at night before bedtime. I don't think she gets much sustenance from the breast-feeding anymore - more of a comfort/bonding thing that we do. She is also on the tall, skinny side - 18 pounds. For meals and snacks, we give her water in a sippy cup - sometimes a little juice but my ped says juice is not necessary so it is more of a treat thing. I started also using a Next Step formula sometimes in her sippy just to make sure she is getting enough vitamins and iron and to get her used to the transition to milk.

Have you taught her to tell you when she is all done (with signs)? Our daughter tells us when she is done and we don't really push her to eat more after that.

Hope that helps. J.

Hi, I also have a 10mo old. Once starting the solids the food schedule gets a little crazy.... sometimes I feel like all I do is feed the little guy! Our son is also on the bigger side (almost 24lbs) and here is what I have been doing (based on asking what other moms did): I feed 3 solid feedings a day, and nurse 4x a day (when he wakes in the am, after 2 naps, and at bedtime). Sometimes I don't think he takes much from the breast, but until they are a year they are supposed to get most of their calories and nutrition from milk; so don't wean too much. I started solids at 6mo, and we've gone pretty slow in that dept-- still just trying chunkier foods as he is pretty picky with the textures. It seriously feels as though you feed every 2hrs... which is hard when he used to nurse every 4hrs! (That was easy!) I've been making food, and it's been fun. I figure snacks will come when he starts weaning from the breast more (around a year). I've looked at the Gerber website for examples of feedings schedules, but our son eats a lot more than that, even though he doesn't 'snack'. Our ped said it was okay, and I think every baby is different. Email me if you want to talk-- 10mo is soooo much fun!

Hello A R,
I totally found the whole introduction to solids and up until the first year so confusing. I'm not sure why, but I wasn't ever sure I was feeding her enough, what was the right way to feed her to make sure weaning the bottle (formula fed) would be easiest, etc. What we did was fed her 3 meals a day and make the bottles her snacks. Then, when we transitioned off the formula we filled in that time with snacks. At 10 months eating still has a lot to do with just the experience of tastes, textures, etc so try to go with the flow and enjoy the mess =o) I hope this helps.

My husband and I used a book called the "The contented little Baby book". You can get is on Amazon for less than $10. It has been so great for our family. We have twins that are now 4 years old and this book that really has set them up to have a healthy eating schedule still.

I hope that is helps you.

I think that at 10 mos solids three meals a day is too much. I gave my children a little in the morning and at night and nursed or bottle fed the other times. They will let you know when they need or want something.

Right now the main source of food (nutrition wise) is the breast milk. Starting foods right now is getting them used to different tastes and textures. My little boy is 9 months old and he too is a very large baby. He is 28 lbs and wears size 18 mos. BUT... his doctor LOVES it!! Because it is breast milk, there is no need to worry as the "rolls" will come off once he starts walking. (My oldest boy who is 8yrs old is tall and skinny but also started out chunky..hehe) Anyways, as far as what and when to feed...I am a licensed childcare provider and I am on the food program which is VERY specific about what we have to feed the children. For a 10 month old they list the following:

BREAKFAST/LUNCH/DINNER:
6-8oz breast milk or formula
2-4 tbsp infant cereal
1-4 tbst fruit and/or vegetable

SNACK:
2-4oz breast milk or formula
0-1/2 slice bread OR 0-2 crackers

For my son I do the cereal and fruit/veggi first and then offer the breast after, I let him go until he is finished.. I don't pump to measure. Also, I have 2 snack times and if my son gets hungry before that I will offer the breast. The rule of thumb at this age is to let your child guide you. If they are hungry, feed them. If they are done, do not force them to eat. If it's time to eat and they won't.. don't force it... they will not let themselves starve. Good Luck.
