Favorite Teas During Pregnancy

It's a dark and stormy night here tonight, and I'm craving a good cup of tea. I'm 8 weeks along right now, and I've cut out caffeine almost completely, except for a 6 oz latte some mornings, and a few swigs of coke zero to get my prenatal vitamin down. I'm not worried about my caffeine intake, but I'm looking for some alternatives, like teas or chai. I drink a cup of tea once in a while (usually Teavana teas), but I'd love to hear some of your favorite teas (health benefits welcome :)) What are your recommendations?

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of your suggestions! I'm going to give peppermint a try to settle my stomach a little. I prefer green teas mostly, but sometimes a black tea for breakfast would be nice. I'm looking for a variety, so I'll check out some fruity teas as well. Thanks again!

don't know if you know of this - but Aveda (yes, the cosmetics company) makes the best tea - they offer the samples when you go in to shop - caffeine free, slighty spicy, sweet with no added sugar - very relaxing - you might try that...

I loved Yogi's Mother To Be tea. http://www.yogiproducts.com/products/details/womans-mothe... I had a hot cup nearly every day. You can get it at the grocery store (health food or baby section) or at a health food store. They also have a Nursing Support tea..loved that one too!

Another tea I really enjoy is Bigelow's Constant Comment. http://www.bigelowtea.com/Catalog/Category/37/55/Orange.aspx (scroll down) It also comes in decaf and can be found with the regular teas at the grocery store. This tea is good hot or iced.

As far as health benefits go....I never had any artificial sweetners during pregnancy. There is just too much that can go wrong when using them (aspertame, etc). I used real (white, brown) sugar, honey, agave nectar, and raw sugar.

I don't care for herbal teas at all (blech) but I LOVE black teas and have a cabinet full of them. My all time favorite is Twining's Irish Breakfast tea. Twining's Black Currant tea is also really good. Heck for me anything by them in their black teas is a winner :)

I also like Constant Comment and Raspberry Royale by Bigelow.

And there's always the good old Lipton for a regular old cup of black tea :)

Green teas are good too, but I'm prefer a more robust tea.

I don't want to contradict, but Red Raspberry Leaf tea shouldn't be drunk until you're at least 36-37 weeks pregnant. It too can induce labor. I actually took it after I found out I lost my first baby to induce miscarriage. It's wonderful to drink while not pg to tone the uterus, and wonderful for the last few weeks of pg to help with childbirth, but not before 36 weeks. Dr's and herbalists used to say it was great during the entire pg, but about 3 years ago opinions began to change. Whatever tea you decide on, if it's a true herbal tea, please check before drinking it to make sure it's safe during pregnancy.

Btw, peppermint tea is wonderful! It helped so much with my morning sickness.

When I was pregnant with both my kids I would drink Green Tea or Mint Green Tea. Those are my favorites. :) I just had my second son April 1st. Congrats on your new baby :)

I saw that you are trying peppermint tea to help with nausea. That is perfectly safe to drink during pregnancy.
I'm a doula, natural childbirth educator, work with many midwives and collaborate with a naturpath and herbalist.
Valerian, green tea and a little black tea are ok to have.
I would like to correct the posting that mentioned that it's not advisable to drink red raspberry tea before 36 weeks. That is just NOT true!! I see this in many bulletin boards. Every midwife and herbalist that I trust will tell you, red raspberry is fine throughout pregnancy. I drank a quart a day throughout my pregnancy. It's a uterine tonic. I suggest a combination of red raspberry leaf, nettles and red clover. The nettles supports the adrenal glands and the red clover is great for blood building.
Please feel free to contact me if you have specific questions or would like more suggestions for teas.

Celestial seasonings Cinnamon Apple Spice and Tropic of Strawberry. Actually, just about any of Celestial seasonings' herb teas. They are naturally caffeine free since they don't use any real tea leaves, taste fabulous, and are great when you want something hot. Chamomile is supposed to be a good, natural sleep aid, too.

There's not enough - raspberry, chai spices, caffeine, or whatever - in a cup of tea to cause harm.

I have drunk a cup of strong black tea every morning for all of my adult life, but when I became pregnant I lost my taste for it completely! Tried switching to peppermint tea for awhile, but mostly went without. Now I have a tea shelf with Black Pearl from Lipton, Good Earth original, Good Earth Black Chai, Plantation Mint from Bigelow. And honey!

Oh..don't drink chai!! Cloves (which are in chai) are a uterine stimulant. And scarily, many of the herbs in chai can induce labor. I love tea and my dr. specifically told me to never drink chai tea.

I couldn't have lived without Raspberry tea, and peppermint tea with honey. Raspberry tea was suggested to me by my Dr. for morning sickness. It really did help. Peppermint tea helped my stomach the most and at the end, really helped with heartburn.

PS.
Quite the Contrary. I was told by 2 OB's and a midwife, that Raspberry tea was absolutely safe. My son isn't even 2 years old. In addition, my best friend just delivered a baby and her midwife suggested it, as well.

Whatever I wanted. I love teas and never really worried too much about my caffeine intake--do you prefer dark or herbal or fruity teas?

I love Celestial Seasonings and drink a lot of Tension Tamer (rather minty), regular Sleepytime (Sleepytime Extra has Valerian and I did not drink it when pregnant), Peppermint (usually Twinnings), and one of my new favorites--Twinnings Herbal Unwind, which is described as "A comforting blend with African Honeybush and the flavors of Mandarin and Orange." I just had some of that tonight actually with a little honey--I went through at least three boxes when I was pregnant. :)

Just for your information, I came across something in Wikipedia from NIH that chamomile tea in pregnancy is linked to contractions and miscarriage. Never would have thought about this!

black tea has caffeine in it as well, of course. I liked peppermint tea, but when I was pregnant, I used to buy the variety packs and just see what I was in the mood for...
