Fashion Emergency
Help...I'm going to a wedding at the end of the month. Of course I bought the perfect "little black dress" from my favorite White House Black Market(it's a short dress. My problem is...can I wear open toe shoes without tights? Or do I have to wear tights and close toe shoes? I don't like the tights with open toe shoes look...I have a pretty good tan (I just go home from vacation). I want to wear no tights and open toe shoes...but will that look silly?
Thanks for the help:)

When it's 10 degrees outside in December & you are dressed like 90 degrees in July, you will look foolish. Wear closed toe shoes & tights & bring along at least a shawl.
Really -nothing says Fashion Victim like shivering limbs & blue lips.

Hi M.! You can definitely do the no tights open-toe shoe look. As long as you are comfortable and don't feel like you will be cold, then go for it! It is appropriate any time of year. Just look at Stacey London : )

I have worn hose with no toes, made especially for open toes shoes. They weren't very expensive, I can't remember the brand but I think I bought them at JcPenney's?

TIM GUNN would say tights are out! Toeless and probably nude is the way now-a-days.

hi M. - definitely wear open toe shoes and no tights. But my advice is to bring along closed-toe shoes and tights or panythose and leave them in your car as a back-up.
There is nothing worse than being cold or less than comfortable at an event where you are supposed to have a good time!
We attended a very nice wedding and reception recently and for some reason the reception room was Freezing cold! I ended up wearing my husband's jacket over my little dress - as did a lot of other women and we had to leave early it was so uncomfortable, had I brought along a little wrap or sweater, or nylons with closed toe shoes, I would have changed in the bathroom and I could have made it through the evening!
have a great time!

Dear M.--honestly, I have no preconceved notion of this, nor would I have had an opinion if no one asked, but...since you asked...I'd go with tights (or sheer hose)/closed toe shoes. It's too late in the season I would think (plus it's snowing today!) to go with bare legs/open toe. This assumes, of course, you are not writing from Florida or Southern California! Patterned/lacey tights or hose could be pretty too. Have fun!

NEVER wear tights with open-toed shoes!
A short dress with open toed shoes and no tights will be lovely.
Enjoy the wedding.

Wear what you love and Rock It! Fashion is much more relaxed than years ago. Personally, I love an open toes shoe and textured tights. But, the look is not for everyone. Show off those legs and enjoy!

We live in snow country. Open-toed shoes in snow look really awful. I recommend you do as someone else suggested. Wear the open-toed shoes but change if you need too. Esp. if there is snow on the ground. Tights are always a good choice, but you do know there are tights that are toeless if that is your choice. Just do the exact match to your skin color if going with open-toed tights.

Just to put in prospective-I went to a VERY high end wedding downtown Chicago last winter. All the young women wore little dresses, no hose and strappy sandals. I gotta say that to me, it looks silly cause they are obviously freezing and it's winter. But it is clearly the fashion, especially for the youngsters. They all have phoney tans as well. For me personally, who likes to do my own thing, I wore a very cool little black vintage dress with funky tights and pumps. So whatever cranks your chain I guess.

You never have to wear tights. The fashionable women in NYC never wear tights!
My rule is you can wear open toe shoes as long as you're not in the snow.
Enjoy!

you can wear whatever you feel good in. If you've got a fast dress and fast shoes and you feel fast in it go for it. Seriously you can wear bare legs with open shoes for evening all year. Have fun and look fly!

I know you have already gotten a lot of responses but I wanted to chime in too. I ALWAYS wear open toe shoes and NEVER wear hose. I went to a wedding in December in the snow with no hose and was fine. I mean seriously, are hose really going to keep your legs warm? NO! ;)
I definitely think you should not wear hose and wear your open toe shoes. Have a great time at the wedding!

No tights/hose with a nice dress ever! Bare legs and either open-toed or closed. Either shoes are fine, just nothing on your legs. Tights are better with skirts, especially more casual ones. Trust me.
Have fun at the wedding.

Wear the tights with the shoes! I just saw a big spread about tights in a magazine (wanna say InStyle?). It had open-toe shoes shown with plenty of open toe shoes. I say get a pair of funky colored or patterned tights to wear with the shoes. It will look so cool. Now I want to find something to wear that requires that look!!!

I never wear hose/tights hate them. If there is snow on the ground I would leave the open toe at home. However, you could were something closed toe and then bring the open toe to the wedding and change. I know this sounds old ladish, but you have to do it in the name of fashion. If there isn't any snow you could wear them without hose, just wear a long coat to keep your legs warm.

I'm going to a holiday party myself. I have two pair of shoes I'm considering. One closed toe one sandal. I will wear the sandal without stockings. My legs still have some summer color so I think it will be fine. Of course I have a friend who thinks my toes will get cold!

I saw a segment on the Today show about this very topic: open toe shoes. And the fashion rule according to the women who was the expert was that it is perfectly acceptable to wear no tights or nylons when wearing open-toe shoes, regardless of the season. So go bare-legged in confidence!

Oh this stuff is so much simpler than everything else...Okay, so here's what you do. Lucky girl that you are go ahead and show off that tan, but if you are a)cold or b)feel completely inappropriate bring along some tights and put them on if you have to. Tights or pantyhose. Pantyhose fit better in that tiny clutch purse. If you are in a car leave them in the car if you decide not to wear them. If it's cold out, stuff em in those mittens. If it's cold you might want to wear them anyway with boots or something. Whatever you do have a great time!I'm so jealous.

I personally don't at all like the look of open-toed shoes with tights. No tights and open-toed shoes is definitely the way to go. It's always been my standard look at this time of year with holiday parties. (And I always also go for a White House Black Market dress...good choice!)
