Family Vacation
Hi! We are about to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary and are looking for a place to go on a small road trip over a long weekend. We have an almost-5-year-old and would like to include him in the vacation. My goal is to find a place about 2-3 hours away from Dayton, and somewhere where we can just hang out, relax, maybe make a fire to BBQ, and fish. I've looked, endlessly, on-line for cottages with some land involved but have had no luck. Any suggestions?

Hi C.. I used to live in Dayton, and now I live in Russell Springs Kentucky....on the great Lake Cumberland. It's just a bit farther than you were shooting for, we're about 4 hours from dayton. I have made the trip many times with my 3 children, and it's not a bad trip. We have a few facilities around the lake that have cottages. Jamestown Resort and Marina has a lodge and cottages. Some cottages are around a pool. There is also the State Dock, which is larger and has nicer facilities, that also has a lodge and I believe cottages. If you're not wanting to stay there, we have a KOA nearby. If you're interested in this location, you can use website Lakecumberland.com and that has a multitude of information for you. I hope you enjoy your trip, and have a safe holiday!

I'm not sure how you feel about camping but my mom and I have always gone to Fort Laramie. It's about an hour up north and you can get a small cabin like place or you could pack your own tent. The cabin like place had two futon beds in it with a small fridge and a microwave. Plus it sat right on the edge of the water so we didn't have to walk far. I enjoyed myself when I was there. Good luck with your search and congratuations on your anniversary.

Why not rent a cabin at Cowan Lake and "rough it"? They're very affordable and provide an excellent opportunity for family bonding. Good luck.
