Family Friendly Resorts in Cancun/Riviera Maya, Mexico

I've gotten several responses so far telling me not to go to Mexico. We watch the news and are fully aware of what's going on. We will go ONLY if this starts to diminish and go away. I would never put my family at risk!!! However, life goes on and we are still making plans for the future...

I'm hoping to get some recommendations on family friendly resorts in Cancun and Riviera Maya, Mexico. We'll be traveling with 3 kids ages - 6, 14, and 17. We're looking for an all-inclusive (preferably) where they'll have something for each of the kids. We'd love to have a nice kiddie camp and activities for the 6 year old and maybe a water park or some adventurous activities for the teenagers. We're thinking of going in late June or mid-August. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So What Happened?

Hello Moms, Thanks for all the replies. Most of you were against going to Mexico either because of the swine flu or the gang violence, etc... I assumed that if you go to a reputable resort (on the coast) you'd be safe but maybe not safe enough??? We're now thinking of going on the East Carribean Nick Cruise in August. They don't have any ports of call in Mexico so that's one upside. However, would it be safe being confined on a cruise ship if the swine flu isn't contained yet?

Don't go!! If you have not watched the news lately, the Swine flu is running rampant in Mexico and every person there is wearing a mask. Its dangerous, so please do not expose your children or yourself to this potentially deadly virus. Not to mention - you will be exposing folks here when you get back.

Please, listen to the media - they like to blow things out of proportion more times than note, but this is very serious. Wait to take this trip to Mexico until much later or just take a trip elsewhere.

The swine flu scare may go away by the Summer but the gang violence, kidnappings, beheadings, etc... probably won't. Statistically speaking, it would be safer for you to vacation in Iraq.
If I were you, I wouldn't even consider going myself much less taking my children.

My very first response is that you should stay local right now, and hold off going to Mexico while this "swine flu" epidemic plays out. We don't know what is going on with that, and you certainly don't want to put your family in danger. It could turn out to be nothing (149 people dying is definitely not "nothing", but we don't know yet if this is the start of something huge or just a momentary thing that will die down quickly.) I wouldn't take the chance. There are plenty of beautiful places in this country to explore.

Barcelo. Hands down, the best. My brother got married there in Feb and we had the whole family there. His daughter is 11 and there were three teenagers. Very family and kid friendly. They have mini golf, and kids pools and playgrounds. There are also activities. I can't say enough good things about it. The family is making plans to go back every year. It is all inclusive and you never have to leave the resort area, so it is very safe. Let me know if you have any questions. Love it, love it, love it.

Hi,
I have been to Riviera Maya - Iberostar resort with the kids(girls 8 and 11). Kids club for young and teens was good. We stayed for 10 days on the resort and found it to be a blast!

Now onto the cruise. They do try very hard to keep it clean, with offering wipes, and opportunities to clean your hands. Unfortunately it is usually the other passengers that ruin it with taking food from the food line, and eating it while still standing in line then coughing or sneezing. it was really not a good sight to see this.

The cruise we went on was a carnival cruise, good for kids too- they do have on board babysitting for $10/ hr if you want a break.

Swine flu is gone from Mexico, and when you go you rarely leave the resort so not to worry it is safe.

but you and your family have to be comfortable with it.
