False Negative Pregnancy Test?? - Baltimore,MD

I was wondering if anyone has ever gotten a false negative on a pregnancy test? I got my IUD taken out at the end of August, 4 days later I got my period on time. I was due for my period yesterday, and still have not gotten it, and I am usually very regular, always have been. I took a test this morning, and it was negative (no signs of the 2nd pink like at all). I know I may be a little irregular since this is my first full cycle after getting the IUD out....but was hoping the pregnancy test was wrong. I felt PMS'y last week - sore boobs, bloated...but now I don't at all. The last time I was pregnant, I took a test the day before I was due, and it was positive, but that could be b/c we had to use invitro, which worked :) I'm really hoping it happens naturally this time around. So, anyone ever been pregnant, but the pregnancy test shows your not?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Well....I got my period last night. It must have just been my body figuring out its full first cycle since my IUD was taken out. Thank you for everyone who shared their experience with me, I will keep it all in mind the next time I think I'm pregnant.

When I was pregnant with my first son, I had 3 tests (each taken about a week apart AFTER my missed period) that all came out negative. Finally the 4th one showed a positive result.

I believe that false negatives are far more common than false positives. You might want to wait a day or 2 and try again!

I agree with previous post that said you should wait a week and test again if your period doesn't show up. Make sure you are using one of the more sensitive tests. http://peeonastick.com/ has a lot of good information about all the different pregnancy tests. Good luck!

I really don't have an answer to your question I just wanted to wish you lots of luck getting pregnant without having to do IVF again. I also have an IVF baby & debating on whether to try again or not. My doctor told me I will not be able to get pregnant on my own. I do not know if I can handle the let down of it not taking. (I had to do 2 rounds before I got pregnant)

With my first child I had false tests not only from home test, but from the doctors as well. I was so sure something was wrong. I must have had at least 6 tests tell me I was NOT pregnant. It all came to a head when one day at work instead of "tossing my cookies" like I had been doing, I passed out. My boss told me to go to the doctors and not come back til I found out what was wrong with me! I went home and did a pregnancy test that evening. It said I WAS pregnant. Two days later my doctor did an exame and said, "well, you are about 4 months pregnant."
So, it's very possible you can be pregnant and get a false negative result. It happened to me several times.
Best of luck to you.

I am happy to report that the first pregnancy test I took when I was pregnant, came up negative, and the second one I took a few days later was positive. I don't know why it came up negative, but maybe the hormone wasn't strong enough yet. I have heard that it helps to take the test first thing in the morning so that your hormone levels are at their highest. I wish you good fertility!

Could be too early to show. Maybe wait a week and retake?

Hi K.,

With my second pregnancy I had two false pregnancy tests! I kept telling my husband I was pregnant and he thought I was crazy. The nagging feeling that I was actually pregnant wouldn't go away so I ended up waiting a few days and then finally went out and purchased a new box of pregnancy tests. Third time was a charm and I came up with a positive test result. In the back of my mind I've always wondered if the first box of tests might have been defective. It might be worth a shot to go out and get yourself a brand new box. Good luck!

I am very regular and when I was late, I took the test and it was negative. A week later w/still no period, I took a test again and it was postive. However the pregnancy ended up being a tubical pregnancy. I hope everything works out for you.

I believe that false negatives are far more common than false positives. You might want to wait a day or 2 and try again!
