Failed Glucose Test
Hi Moms. I just learned that I failed the 28-week glucose tolerance test. Cut-off was 130 and I came in at 137. I know everyone's different and every pregnancy is different (this did not happen first time around for me), but I was wondering if anyone failed the first, but passed the second. Or if the second procedure is horrible (I hate having blood drawn - lucky me!) And do you know if being addicted to Oreos could have contributed to this - ha ha (not kidding). Though, I have also been eating healthy - Oreos are my treat. Thanks, Moms!

I failed it once and the second came out normal. Please don't ask me which kid, I can't remember which one had braces twice at the moment.

My sister failed the first one and passed the second. Also, my dr. used 140 as the cut off and I recently read an article that said that using 130 will catch a few more cases of GD than the higher number but it will also result in a lot more women failing the first test but passing the second. Good luck.

I had GD withy my second pregnancy. IF you do end up having gestional diabetes, do not feel like its your fault for loving Oreo's. It's basically hormones from the placenta rejecting the natural insulin your body makes. So when you go for your second test, it's a three hour test. You will have blood drawn three times (once every hour after you drink). If you doctor calls you to say you do have GD, do not cut out all carbs. Quick lesson in carbs, 15 grams is one serving. Check the labes regarding bread, pasta, etc to see how many servings you can have (probalby half a cup of pasta, once slice of bread) and it the carbs with LOTS of protein to help your body absorb the sugar (so eggs, cheese, meat with your tiny tiny portion of potatoes, pasta or bread). You will be sent to a nutrionist (sp? sorry) and she/he will make up a "diet" plan for you. Again, NOTHING you did wrong. Just your body and it's hormones. Good luck!

Stress will raise your blood sugar. And yes the Oreos are a problem. Try to have more protein snacks, almonds, etc. They help blood sugar levels.

I failed the first but passed the second.
My "failure," I'm pretty sure, was due to the fact that I ate my hour 3 hours later than usual (terrible, busy day at work), and instead of eating my lunch 4 hours before my glucose test, I ate 1 hour before. I did call the doctor's office and ask them about & ask if I needed to reschedule. They said, oh no, that's fine it's not a big deal. Yeah, right. After failing & then 3 super-stressful days of thinking I'd failed my baby before he was born (between the 2nd, longer test being delayed and getting the test results from same), I took the longer test and passed just fine.

I have three children. When I was pregnant with two of them I failed my first test. With my first child I passed the three hour test. With my third child I did not. My levels were borderline. I did have to check my blood, meet with a dietitian and watch what I was eating. It wasn't bad at all.my dr assured me that my craving for peanut butter cups did not cause the diabetes, but was on the no list for the rest of the pregnancy. I was also told not to eat past midnight, so I scheduled the earliest appointment possible. I got shaky from all the sugar and no food, so I was glad I packed a granola bar in my purse for when it was over. Good luck!

the 3 hour glucose test is where you have to be fasting and you go in for 3 hours. you have to drink a cup full of nasty sickly sweet sugary stuff and they draw your blood at 1 hour 2 hours and 3 hours......i had no issue with the blood drawing. but i had all day sickness throughout my entire 2nd pregnancy. so when i went to do the 3 hour and had to drink that stuff on an empty stomach it made me so sick to my stomach i had to lay in an exam room the whole time. the nurses kept coming to check on me. with my first pregnancy i had no issues with gestational diabetes but my second pregnancy with the twins i did. good luck!

With my second child I failed the glucose test and had to retake. I passed the retake and no issues or extra treatments. Don't be worried about a little difference in number but take the second test to be safe. The second procedure isn't horrible, just time consuming. I had to go to the lab drink the stuff and sit for a few hours before the blood draw. Although it was nice in that I took a book and read since my first child wasn't with me...I wouldn't recomend that time at the lab with an active child.
Continue your healthy eating. I think treats are allowed too.
