Eyeglasses for a 10 Month Old

Following a doctor appointment yesterday, we learned that my son will need to wear glasses...every moment he is awake. Does anyone have any recommendations or words of wisdom? Neither my husbnad nor I has every worn glasses or had vision problems, so we are very new to this. My other concern is my son is a twin with a very active sister. Any thoughts on where to buy, what to look for, etc. Would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

Hi C.--Your son will be FINE! My daughter started wearing glasses at 11 months old. I noticed that she would turn her head to the side to look at people. Everyone told me it was just her being "shy." That just wasn't enough for me. I went to her pediatrician and told her that I didn't think my baby could see. She referred me to a pediatric ophthalmologist (I lived in Texas then). We had a 6am appointment and he dilated her pupils and diagnosed her with severe far-sightedness. Neither me nor hubby wears glasses so we were dumbfounded. She got her glasses and refused to wear that little band around her head or those huge hooked shaped ear pieces. So she got a cute pink pair of regular glasses (none of the kiddie attachments) and she NEVER took takes them off even now--she's 4. We do have to train her to tell other little kids not to touch her glasses because they are fascinated with them and they want to take them off. The doctor says by age 12, she will probably not need glasses anymore. This is only because we started early. Be proud that you found the problem and are fixing it early. Your son is going to get a lot of attention whn he wears his glasses and it's kinda fun sometimes :) Good Luck Email me if you need info about Dr.'s here in the ATL ____@____.com

Hi Cristina,

I started wearing glasses when I was a young baby (my mother thinks at around 15 months). My mother was also very worried about how to keep the glasses on me and how to avoid spending a fortune replacing broken ones. Turned out that once I put the glasses on I could SEE SO MUCH BETTER that I didn't want to take them off and I was very protective of them. She even had to let me fall asleep with them on and then sneak back in to get them at naps and nightime.

Recently I learned about Zenni Optical, an online store where glasses can cost as little as $8! (www.ZenniOptical.com) My husband ordered a pair recently and is very happy with them. Should you choose to buy glasses from Zenni or some other discount store I do suggest that you ask the optician at you pediatric opthamologist's office to double check them since your son is too young to tell you if there is a problem.

Good Luck!
E.

Hey I was just curious, how did they find out your son needed glasses? Is there a special test for kids that young or was he having trouble bumping into things? I was just curious. Only one of my kids hs my terrible vision problem, but we are getting ready for another baby and I just wanted to know what kind of signs you had.

Thanks,

T.

Hi C.,

What did the eye doctor say was wrong with your son's vision? My daughter had to start wearing glasses last August due to lazy eye she is about to turn 7. I took her first to Target Optical and then had a second opinion at a Pediatric Ophthalmologist. I brought her glasses at Target though. My nephew started wearing glasses at 3 but that is the youngest that I have known a child to wear them. I know that your son being 10 months old it will be a challenge to keep them on him and also to keep his sister from grabbing them. Did your eye doctor give you recommendations?

A little about me:
Full-time working mother of a girl 7/ boy 4. Married happily for almost 8 years.

We just visited a pediatric eye doctor so they could check my 2-year old's tear duct. We saw two doctors at Thomas Eye Group in Sandy Springs (in the St. Joseph's Hospital Doctor's building). Drs. Levine and Lipsky are both very nice. They treated my daughter and I very well and they sell glasses on-site. You can find them online at www.ThomasEyeGroup.com.
