Eye Problem in 10 Week Old
I noticed a few days ago that one of my daughter's eyes is a little swollen. Then today when she woke up it was a little crusty. Throughout the day it has been watery and a little goopy. I am for sure going to take her to the doctor if it gets worse but I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience with thier babies and what was it?

I know tons of people said this already but I just want you to know you are not alone. This happend to my daughter when she was 6 days old, we were back at the dr. with a clogged tear duct. The doc gave us a cream that we had to rub on her eye 2 or 3 times a day for about a week and it was all clear. No permament damage at all! She is almost 1 (!) and she sees fine, no eye problems since.

Clogged tear duct! If you call, they will tell you to massage the inside of her nose, right next to her eye, with your pinky finger. As long as the fluid stays clear or yellow-ish and doesn't turn green they probably won't even have you bring her in. Good luck!

My Son had the same problem when he was a few weeks old. We took him to our pediatrician and it ended up being a blocked tear duct. His was infected a little bit, so the dr. prescribed an antibiotic which cleared it up right away (within a few days). You can also massage the corner of the eye a little bit, too, to try and break up some of the crusty stuff. But my advice would definitely be to take her to the pediatrician and get antibiotics if she needs them. Good luck! And, don't worry about the blocked tear duct... it is very common in little babies.

My son had this same problem at one week and a friend of mine's daughter did at 4 weeks. We both thought our babies had pink eye, but in fact they had a blocked tear duct. We were told to put a warm washcloth over the eye in the corner near the tear duct. This is also how we cleaned the goop. It could also be pink eye, in which case our doctor told us to drop breastmilk into the baby's eye until we could go in to the doctor that Monday.

My daughter had the same thing around the same age. After doing some research, I put some breast milk in her eye. It was cleared up by the next day. Apparently the antibacterial properties in the breast milk killed the infection. That stuff is like liquid gold, I swear!

Hi E. - as everyone else is telling you - clogged tear duct. Both of my little girls had one eye that had the problem. It can go on for quite awhile. You are supposed to clean/massage it with each diaper change to get it under control. It seems to take forever to really go away and can last up until she is a year old. My 6 month old is finally a month free of it. Hopefully your daughter will clear up sooner.
Congratulations on your new baby girl!

Hi E.,
It sounds like a plugged tear duct. The pediatrician can tell you for sure. My older son had this when he was a few weeks old. I cried my eyes out (first baby and all that.) I used warm wash clothes to clean the eye goopy, and the doctor gave me medicine for him and had me massage the corner of his eye. If it doesn't fix itself within a certain period of time, they'll open the duct up. I didn't have to have this done, but it was a possibility.
Good luck,
D.

It does sound like a blocked tear duct. The doctor will recommend treatment based on the severity. My son had a blocked tear duct and the only thing the pediatrician recommended was a couple of drops of breast milk a few times a day. His case was mild. The fact that her eye is swollen makes me think you ought to at least call the doctor's office and speak to the nurse. The nurse can tell you if you need to come in or not.
