Extreme Weather ~ Am I Crazy??

So call me crazy but I like extreme weather and I'm glued to the TV listening to the latest on Nemo. We had a 2 ft snow here a couple years ago and I loved it. I wish we'd get a great winter storm like they get to have in the NE!

I think living in the mild climates - 75 everyday - would be boring!

Anyone else feel the same??

p.s. -- clearly, I'm not wishing harm to anyone... No need to remind me that they can be dangerous and devastating, but let's pretend for a moment that no one gets hurt and no one's property gets damaged and everyone takes the proper precautions :)

What can I do next?

When I was a kid we had a massive ice storm...it was great! LOL We all stayed together to keep warm, we played board games all day as a family by the light of a kerosene lamp, etc.

I think the power was out for five days and we barely noticed. :)

I also remember that because we had a steep hill in out back yard. The ice made a tree limp bow really low to the ground. So we would run and slide on the ice, grab the tree branch and it would either slow us down or make us flip over. Crazy kids.

I hate extreme weather on both ends. I think that 75 degrees every day would be awfully nice! I'm saving that for retirement!

I know, I totally agree with you. I grew up in So Cal, and it was SO boring! We moved to VA 2 years ago and I can't wait for a big snow!! Tornados do freak me out though, I do not like that type of extreme weather. I do like thunderstorms though :)

I too love the extreme weather!

I met my husband in 1996 during a huge Ice Storm that hit the Pacific Northwest.... and it was great!

I feel there is something divinely romantic when you wake up in the morning and look outside and see more than a foot of snow...it's like the whole city stops and we are all doing the same thing, trying to dig ourselves out, at the same moment in time. We all get to be late to work (or not go in at all) and the kids have a snow day! It's almost magical...we are all the same for that short amount of time! LOVE LOVE IT!

~I would LOVE to retire to somewhere in the south that gets the BIG thunder and lightening storms...somewhere on the water where you can watch the big storms roll through!

I love a good blizzard, and I even make the best of a couple of weeks of extreme cold temperatures (-45). We are always prepared, and it is a good excuse to slow down and take it easy. I also love a good thunderstorm.

I agree. I'm in NH. The scene outside my front door is all of my neighbors cars with snow up to their hoods. I'm sure my car is in the same condition, but it's in the lot that I can't see. I'll venture out later to dig it out. We currently have a parking ban in effect until noon tomorrow. That means no parking on the streets. They towed all of the cars that were left on the street overnight. That is the first time in the 14 years that I've lived in this neighborhood that they have towed instead of ticketed. I'm lucky in that my neighborhood has power lines underground so we almost never lose power. I think I might feel differently about the storm if I was cold and in the dark. Right now I'm online, I have chili in the crock pot and as soon as my daughter is out of the shower it's movie time.

M:

The most snow I have ever seen in one "storm" was the 39.5" we got in 2003 here in DC.

The coldest temp I have ever been in was -20, in Boston. It was FREAKING COLD.

Do I like "extreme weather"? Yeah - it is cool to see Mother Nature/God/whatever you want to call it at work. I too wish we could get some snow here in DC that would stick....

I have ALWAYS wanted to be snowed in!!! I have this fantasy of being in a warm cozy house with a fireplace going, with hot cocoa, plenty of food, and all snuggled up playing games or something while it's a blizzard outside. Again, this is just a fantasy as I live in San Diego County and even though we get a tiny dusting of snow every few years and actual snow storm where I live would never happen. I don't think I could live in extreme weather full time. I'm a wimp as I hate to be cold or too hot. I do feel bad for people actually having to go through this though.

I survived the Blizzard of 77.

We had a 22 foot snow drift in our back yard - it was as tall as my mothers house.
We were lucky it didn't drift on top of the house - some buildings collapsed under the weight of the snow.
While it was blowing you literally could not see the hand on the end of your arm - zero visibility is pretty freaky.
We couldn't open the garage door - it was snowed shut - so we dragged our little snow thrower and shovels through the living room to get out the front door.
It took us 3 days to dig a path to the street - and it was hard because you could not throw the snow high enough to throw it away from where you were digging.
We were lucky we never lost power.
School was closed for 2 weeks and we were glad to go back so we could take a break from shoveling.
The streets looked like canyons for weeks.
9 months later there was a baby boom.

I don't mind a little exciting weather.
But I wouldn't want to go through that again.

I am like B. I survived the winter of '77-'78. In the back roads of Ky and Tn. We didn't go to school for 6 weeks! That's what happens when you can't run buses on those back roads. We would come in and get hot cocoa and play a lot of cards.

We had so much fun. Go out for a couple hours in the morning and in the afternoon. 3 girls on a sled would sometimes turn it over like the guy on the tricycle on laugh-in. I am showing my age now!

It's fun as a kid or if you don't have to go anywhere. I hate shoveling it to go to work. It would snow in St Louis and I would be on 270 and we would just pick something that looked like a lane in this 10 lane blank slate. No fun.

At some point in my life I would like to storm chase. I have been in a tornado. Ripped a barn up about a half mile away. Wow, the power of wind!
110 degrees is not fun but I don't want to shovel snow so I will take it.

We've been experiencing all kinds of extremes. Climate change is real even though there are still a lot of people who deny the science. But it's not necessarily better in warmer climates - think "Katrina" and the sites of a lot of tornadoes.

I find consistently mild weather to be far less boring than extreme weather, because at least the kids and I can get outside and do something. When it's too cold, all we can do is stay inside and drive each other crazy.

I don't mind it every now and again but it gets old quickly! Two winters ago we had a snowstorm the day after Christmas that was about 2 feet and then got another 6-12 inches every week after that for the rest of January. Total snowfall was 5.5 feet in 30 days. I literally didn't see the ground in my yard until almost the end of March. After a few weeks the kids didn't even want to go sledding anymore. My freshman and junior years in college hold records for the snowiest winters in Boston. One had just under 9 feet of snow over the winter and the other had 8. That's a lot of snow for a metropolitan area and getting around was just miserable.

So...I enjoy a good storm like anyone else but like them one at a time. Some winters seem like an endurance challenge and some are a breeze, but that's the reality of living in a climate like this. When I get really sick of it, we'll move.

I live in Florida and I HATE cold weather. I also HATE snow. That being said, a storm isn't that big a deal as long as you have plenty of supplies and don't have to go drive in it to get to work. I don't mind a rainstorm at night after we get home and we don't have to go anywhere else.

I have not really paid much attention to this nemo thing, I guess because it sounds like our normal every year. Last year we go 133 inches of snow. What I always find funny in the lower 48 are all the school closures. We have never had our schools close due to snow, even if we get 2-3 feet in 24 hours we still have school. The only times they cancel school is for ice.

Well, I think it's silly calling this "extreme weather" when this is really typical for New England/North East states. I remember nearly every winter being like this and people didn't freak out. I have an uncle in NH who just recently retired as a principal and he said that every single year, in storms far worse than this all season long, students came to school on skis, snow shoes, and snow mobiles. They still do it.

Two winters ago I think we had storms like this twice a week for two months or something.

Dangerous? Yes, if people don't take precautions or prepare properly. But living on the East Coast this is what happens. I can't stand it, personally, but that's because it makes my chronic pain disorder much worse. I would love it if we had year-round 75*F or higher. That sounds like heaven to me.

Winter is my favorite season. I love it. I love getting out and driving around after ice storms seeing all the sparkling trees and buildings.

I do realize that my joy is a hardship on others of course. There are millions of homeless people that have no where safe to stay until it warms back up.

I wish that everyone could be safe and not harmed by hot or cold weather. But I love walking around in my cowboy boots and a long thick coat. Just breathing in the clean air and feeling the cold on my face.

I imagine that I would be bored with temperate temperatures too. I am not really liking this spring weather this winter either.

Grew up in in CA, live in Phoenix now. You crazy people can keep your "extreme weather" that you're longing for!! I'm sure living in it every winter, several days out of the year, and being in danger because of it sucks.

No one remembers our "extreme" weather here in Phoenix, for oh, I don't know, at least 3 months of the year, in which it's too damn hot to do anything and people are dying because of it. You can have it, too!!

In some ways.

It's great until you actually live in it or through it. I lived in Canada for four years and the winters were like the NEMO thing. In fact the first winter set a record of 22 feet. It was nothing to go to be and have 4 inches and wake up to 4 feet of snow to be moved for hubby to go to work. The school buses still came and the kid still went to school except for three days once. About six years back I had a tornado go through town about a mile from the house and it did a good bit of damage. Governor Bill Richardson, then came to town and declared an emergency.

Oh and the temps of -45 to 110 for the climates makes you dizzy. Thicker blood for the winter and thinner for the summer.

Happy to have the high 90s and wish for a bit of rain this year to end the dust bowl affect.

This has been an awful blizzard! The rds are closed. There are drifts of snow up to 4 or more ft here. None of my friends can get out of their driveways or houses right now. A lady in town went into labor last night and the ambulance could not get there. One of the police officers is still stuck in his car. The wind is still blowing and it's cold. Some people are out of power ! It's really scary. I would not wish this on anybody...There has been tooooo much snow. Two ft of snow would have been tolerable. Our driveway is being done now. It has taken 2 hours so far, and it is not done. The plow came by and just buried our driveway in with another 4 ft of snow ---after it was plowed ! I do not know how I will get out of it (one day) w/ the snow being piled so high and very little visiblity. I can't even walk to my retired neighbors house to shovel by their front door. It's too much to even walk in. There is only 1 lane open on the rds---That's a recipe for disaster if there was an emergency. It's not good right now if you are in it. It's much worse than the storm you guys had!

I would much rather live in a mild climate !

You can have this weather ! I WISH there was only 2 feet of snow here !!!! That would have been a pc of cake !
