Extreme Nasal Congestion and Sleep Disruption

Hi Mamas,
My wonderful 3 year old has a history of "wheezing" (aka likely asthma) that is usually virally triggered and nut allergies. In the recent past, she started snoring at night and it seems to be due to some environmental allergy. For over a week she has been sleeping very fitfully, semi-waking/crying every few minutes b/c she's not getting enough air through her nose and doesn't breathe through her mouth. She's taking claritin, which helps a lot with the breathing issues in general, but doesn't really address the nasal congestion. I regularly squirt her nose with saline to flush it out, but that's not really doing much either. The doctor recently prescribed a non-steroidal antihistamine spray, but after 5 days, I haven't noticed a difference. Before gearing up to a steroidal nasal spray, I thought that I'd ask you for advice. Thanks for your input!

So What Happened?

I dragged my feet about using a steroidal spray. Flonase turned out to be a wonder drug! Within two days she was sleeping peacefully. Certainly will try to wean her off as soon as possible so that she doesn't use when the allergens are gone, but feel so grateful that it did the trick!

Nasal congestion can be due to:
1) stuck nose mucus
2) inflamed nasal passages. Hence, making it hard to breathe.

Snoring, due to stuck nose.
Discomfort = fitful sleep

Antihistimine: dries out the mucus
Saline spray = loosens the nose mucus. Does not get rid of it.

But inflamed/constricted nasal passage can still be present.

Steroidal based meds.= addresses the inflammation. By dilating the passages and/or the bronchial passages. Thus, making breathing normalized.
It is used for short term.

If she can, I would also use a "Neti Pot" nasal rinse. To clear out her sinuses.

There is also "Little Noses' nasal decongestant for kids. Found at drugstores. I use that on my kids when needed.

I would go to walmart and invest in a small air purifier. They have ones geared for small rooms. The one I purchased has a dial on it so you can put the current month we are in. It did help with my son who always has a few times every february or march when he gets bronchitis. The air purifier seemed to help and he woke up the next morning and said,I did not cough at all Mommy. It costs around thirty seven bucks. I do not know if you have used it or not but Zyrtec for children is good for allergies. Good luck.

You mean like Flonase, etc? That can take quite a WHILE to really work.
Can you prop her matrress a bit?
I'd also run a cool mist humidifier & keep using the saline very frequently.
Good luck!

Hi J..
It sounds like you are working on treating the cause of the problem, and have some great suggestions for that. I just wanted to add that for relief in the meantime you might consider the breathe right nose strips for kids. I have used them on both of my kids many times. They don't have any medicine in them, they just open the nasal passages so air can get in there. They won't cure the problem, but they might help her get some rest by making it easier to breathe through her nose.
Good luck and I hope she feels better soon!

hi. a humidfier might work too. when my daughter is stuffy, i tip just a couple drops of eucalyptus oil on her pillow. it's strong so you don't need much. i think the air purifer will be helpful too sinc eyou say it's environmental allergies.

There is a saline gel called Ayr. I get it at my grocery store and it really helps my little ones sleep. I tried it on myself first, and it really helped me too, but its safe for young children. My 2 year old was having trouble waking in the night last week. Once I realized he was having trouble breathing through his nose, I wiped his nose and put a small amount of Ayr just inside both nostrils. This was at 2am and he'd been up twice since bed time. Once I "Ayr"ed him, he slept through til morning.

Hi J.,

My kids had the same issue until my sister suggested that I detox my house. It did wonders! We removed everything synthetic in the house and replaced those items with natural ones. There was an almost immediate improvement. It's amazing how many synthetic things there are in just one room.

I never had to use medication after that point and every allergy went away. Detoxing is simple and actually not expensive at all if you do it the way I did. I'll be glad to walk you through what I did if you want to take this route.

God bless,

M.

heres what i do with my daughter that is like that. I do a nasal rinse on her. i started at 3 years old (shes 4 now). it flushes a saline mix up the nose and into the sinus. i have a squeeze bottle for my daughter. i will squeeze it for a few seconds (after it starts draining out the other side) then i have her blow out of her nose. i do this until the bottle is gone. then i have her blow her nose really well. this helps soo much with her allergies that are environmental. it took my daughter about a week for my daughter to get comfortable with the nasal rinses. i use the neil med nasal wash because its guarrenteed to not burn the nose.
