My sister-in-law filed for Bankruptcy a few years back and seeing how things have worked out for her, my advise would be to please continue to look at other options. It will be SO unbelievably difficult to get a mortgage or even a credit card once your have filed for bankruptcy.

I filed bankruptcy 15 years ago in NYC after a devastating and career stopping medical condition. I have since changed careers and recovered and spent 10 or more painstaking years to rebuild my credit. I do not recommend it. I did find my way out and stayed completely debt free for those 15 years but again, after being a SAHM in two countries with husband and his family in one and my ailing parents in another I have again found myself in debt. I consolidated debt and stay on a budget, a tight one. You'd be surprised what you can live without. I am also planning to return to work part-time in September when my son is in 1st grade. Feel free to email me if you would like more advice. Best of luck.

I filed back in '98 - in CA and it was the last straw before our divorce. At the time it's what we chose to do. If we hadn't I think we would have been splitting up debt in an already contencious situation. So it was the right option "at the time". I later found a guru of finance in my old home Nashville, TN His name is Dave Ramsey and he has a website, a radio show and MANY books on the subject. He went through it too. He even has a hotline where you can call and speak to him and ask the question you have - www.daveramsey.com
It did take 10 years before my credit was clear.
