Experience with Getting off Birth Control Pills?

My sis in law recently discontinued Ortho TriCylen Lo due to planning a child next yr. (she wants to 'cleanse' her system for at least 8 mos before trying for a kid...) She has been on it since March 2005.

It's been a month since she quit, and yesterday she was supposed to get her period (she was regular like a clock before ever starting OCP's). All she got was lots of cramping and bloating for the last 4 days, no spotting or nothing.

My question is:
1) has anyone who has been on the Pill for roughly 2 yrs have this type of irregular periods after they quit taking it?? How long did it take to get back to regular periods?

2) How long did it take u to get pregnant after quitting the Pill?

Thanks sooooooooooooo much moms. I have learnt nothing but great stuff from y'all since I've been a member of this site.

What can I do next?

This is totally normal. I was on BC for a long time. I went off in January of '05. My periods were irregular for about 4-6 months or so. I was pregnant by July '05. Just tell her to give it time and not worry, her system will get on track and worrying will only dely getting pregnant!! Good Luck

I was on OrthoTriCyclin and the "Lo" version for about 8 years. I went off the pill in April 2 years ago. Got my first period at the end of July, and never got a second period because I got pregnant in September.

My sister had been on TriCyclin for about the same amount of time and got her period back like clockwork the next month. So who knows? Does she exercise a lot? Is she underweight? I think my competing in triathlons that summer and being a bit underweight probably contributed to it taking longer for my body to kick back into gear. That, and my periods were frequently irregular before I went on the pill.

She can tell whether she's ovulated if she starts charting her temperatures - we started doing this after about a month because I kept wondering when oh when could I get pregnant.

I guess my point is that everyone's different. If she's not ready to be pregnant yet she needs to take some steps to avoid pregnancy until she is ready - either condoms or at least keeping track of her fertility (see the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility - this is a *great* resource for both avoiding pregnancy and trying to conceive).

I was on the pill for alot of years before trying for my first...(I believe it may have also been the "ortho"). I had no problems after I stopped taking it..and got pregnant the third month of no pill.
Sorry I don't have any other info for you. Good luck to your sis in law
