I have recently purchased a Eureka Optima Lightweight Upright Vacuum, paid about $65 - it broke within a month. Before that I had another similar cost/style vacuum, it too broke after about 5 months. We do not have pets, and have VERY little areas to vacuum in the home, so I have no idea what is going on!
We have hardwood throughout, with the exception of area rugs and carpet in the basement. I need a reasonably priced vacuum that will work for more than 6 months! I want to spend no more than about $80-$100. Please help!
I really like the Kenmore brand. The one you pull with a canister. That's the only vacuum I ever had (40 yrs. 2 total). I get them at Sears.
I had my first Kenmore for 20 yrs, and I just bought a new one about 2 yrs ago. My older one still works, but the hose was run over by our car, after using it to vacuum the car.
Hoover makes a Dyson knock off that is great. It's $100 at Walmart. Dyson's patent wore off a few years ago and Hoover uses the same "no suction" technology. I have had one for 6 months and love it.
I also recommend Oreck. You can get a model for less than $400 for sure, they always run deals in their stores.
I saw one on sale at Costco recently, for around $200 - and it came with the canister vacuum, which is great for small jobs. It's light weight and does a great job.

I would suggest checking consumer reports. They might have some helpful information regarding the specific type of vacuum you are searching for.
I had the same problem. I think I was buying a vaccuum every year or so and then decided to just close my eyes and spend the money on a Dyson without thinking too much of the price. I love it and it comes with a 5 year warranty that I made sure to register for it.
i have a dyson, i know its expensive but its worth every penny i will always have a dyson from now on. we have carpet and hardwood through out and works so good on both!
Oreck. I see that you only want to spend a little money, but if you keep having to buy $100 vaccuums, what is the point? You might as well spend $400 and then never need a new one! Just my .02. I have all hard floors and some area rugs and I LOVE mine.
They don't make vacuums to last anymore. I buy Kenmore canisters. I buy one every 5-10 years or so.
To have a vacuum that is going to last longer than a year, you will need to spend closer to 200-300 --in my opinion.
I am in the same situation you are in. I have a Eureka for upstairs with my hardwood and area rugs and a Dirt Devil for downstairs with my carpet. The Eureka started to literally fall apart after 6 months, and my husband has put it back together with screws and duck tape twice. The Dirt Devil has gone through 4 belts in the last 2 years, which I still can't figure out why. We don't have pets and the basement only gets vacuumed once a week. We only payed $50 for both vacuums and bought them at Target. I am interested in seeing what others have to say. Good luck to us both!
In 1988 I paid $700 for my Kirby. People told me I was crazy, but it still works great after 21 years. The only problem I have with them now is their stupid door-to-door high-pressure sales methods. I'm not sure I'd buy another, just because of that. But I'm not going to be in the market for awhile as it runs like new. I have seen people post on here about Dyson Animal vacuums and how well they work. I think they are a little bit pricier than normal. Consumer reports could tell you what is worth the $$.
