My husband's cousin recently became engaged and they are having a party. Her mother, my husbands Aunt, is hosting the party. There was no mention of gifts. Is it customary to bring a gift to an engagement party? Or give money? Isnt that what the bridal shower and/or wedding is for? We dont want to be the only people not giving a gift, or the only people to show up with a gift.

What do you think?

What can I do next?

The engagement party is usually for the two families to get together and meet and celebrate. Some people will bring gifts and others won't. I would ask some other family members what they plan on doing. At my best friend's engagement party, they received bridal magazines, money, champagne, and other small gifts. I gave them very elegant his and hers coffee mugs form halmark. I think they were only $14. I would at least get a nice card. If no one gives them anything, its just a card, and if others give gifts, they can say that at least you were thinking of them.

Traditionally, an engagement party was a way of presenting the couple to their extended family and friends as a first step in the transition to marriage and to help everyone begin to be accustomed to the idea that the couple's place in society was about to change. A gift was not a part of it.

That said, we now give gifts for every little thing we can think of, thanks to the power of advertising. If the couple drinks, you could take a bottle of sparkling wine, or if not, perhaps a nice sparkling cider of your choice. You wouldn't be "empty-handed", nor would you be over the top in your gesture.

It is traditional to give a small gift.
I usually give a pretty desk clock, a custom entry mat, A bottle of Champagne. A pretty crystal vase.

I love this site.. They do great work, it ships fast and I think it has great choices and prices.

I'd bring a small gift like a bottle of wine. I saw a website soem time back where you can have a special label made...maybe you could get somethign with their wedding date on it if they have the date set. Other wise, a simple bottle and done.

If they don't drink.....maybe a flowering plant that they will have for their home?

Or a picture frame that says something like just married or love on it that they can use for one of the million photos they will have from the day ;)

You do not have to bring a gift to an engagement party, but a card and a bottle of wine would be nice (if they drink wine). You really can't go wrong with that!

Gifts are for the shower and wedding, this is just to celebrate to engagement!
