Endometrial Ablation - Allergic Reaction
Hi everyone. I am hoping someone has experienced what happened to me so I can pin down what I am allergic too. I had a Novasure ablation on Friday afternoon. My doc did this under general anesthetic and I also receive some drugs for nausea in my IV. That evening I was given darvocet for pain and also diflucan. Saturday morning I woke up with a rash on my belly and breasts that was bright red and very itchy. I didn't take any more medication because I was sure I had a reaction to something. By Sunday the rash was almost gone. Has anyone had this reaction before and any idea as to what? Darvocet's side effects did not list a rash. I have had diflucan before so I didn't think that would be it. Any comments or help would be appreciated!!
So What Happened?™
I wanted to thank everyone for their input. I had called my doctor and since I had so many different things, he was unsure what I could have reacted to. I truly suspect the Darvocet or the Diflucan because that was the last two things I took around 10 p.m. and then woke up with the rash the next day. Since my IV was removed by 6 p.m., it probably wasn't anything that was given via IV since I did not get a noticeable reaction until the next day. I think I will avoid both in the future. Thank you again for all your info. You ladies are wonderful!!!

Unfortunately there is no right answer to this question. The rash was probably an allergic reaction to one of three things. Either it was something they used in the procedure, the Darvocet or the Diflucan. The only way to know would be to eliminate the two and will still have the other one on board. Since the reaction was only a rash and not anaphylaxis then I would try diflucan again if needed and make sure you have some benadryl on hand in case the reaction happens again then take it. Then you will know if it is the diflucan. But it is very possible that if you never have had the Darvocet before that it could be the darvocet, it is more common for people to have and allergy to this. But you will not for sure ever know unless you have only the one medication on board and this happens. Hope this helps.

Did they give you anything else with the anesthesia -- like perhaps an antibiotic -- that could have caused the rash? You might as your gyn or the doctor that did the procedure.

I don't know if you've had general anesthesia before, but a lot of people get a rash after anesthesia and it just goes away on its own. That doesn't mean it couldn't be one of the other meds you took or even a combination of them... You can always call your doctor!

Hi, D.. The only time I had that rash was when I had both my kids via C-section and the tape they used and the pads they put under me made me break out in the same rash. It was worse than having my C-section! I am glad your rash didn't last too long, but I feel for you in having to deal with it at all. God Bless.

Were you on any morphine? Some people have strange and various reactions to that.

It sounds like you have had an allergic reaction to Darvocet. This will never be listed as a side effect for any medication. However, call your doctor and tell them what happened. Ask them for a different pain medication if you still need one. Do NOT take anymore Darvocet and make sure you list it as an allergy to medication in the future. You can take over the counter Benadryl (Diphenhydromine=generic for Benadryl) to help with any hives that you may have left. This WILL make you sleepy, so do not drive. Good luck :)

Your best bet would be to call your doctor, but in the meantime, try this link.

I don't know if they would have used betadyne on that area but I have an alergic reaction like that to betadyne (that reddish liquid they use to sterilize your skin).
