We use frozen popcorn kernels in a bag for an icepack. It doesn't freeze you out like frozen veggies or ice. My kids will actually keep the pack on their bums rather than complaining about how cold the darned thing is.

The cold pack is all you need.

I don't know, I worry about it too much and always take them to the ER to get an X-ray. After Natasha Richardson died from bumping her head I get so worried and don't feel better until I know their okay. I would use the ice on 10 and off 10, switching back and forth to prohibit ice burn.

If the bump is as big as you make it sound, I'd get her checked my a doctor. Otherwise, ice it, but be sure not to put the ice right against her skin. Wrap it in a towel first, or it could cause skin damage.

Ice is the thing for swelling, as far as I know. People used to put butter on burns, but they use ice for that now as well. I wrap a towel around the ice pack (which is sometimes improvised - ice cubes in a ziplock) because it's easier to "wear."

Oh, and kisses help, too, of course! :^)

Ice during the first hour is key to stopping the hemmoraging and bringing the swelling down. The sooner you get on it, the more likely there will be little to no scarring, bruising, or a risk of rupture and the need for stitches if the goose egg is big enough. I agree with a previous poster...I'd go in to get checked if it's as big as it sounds.

I think ice is about all you can do. I give my daughter a sucker while we do it to keep her still. Dr. Sears has good info that I refer too when we get those darned lumps around here. He helps me stay sane, since those spots look awful.
