Eating Pickles While Pregnant Now Makes Me Sick

I have been eating pickles (yes I love them and they are loaded with salt I know) my entire pregnancy. Within the last two days when I eat them I get horrible stomach cramps and within a few hours am running to the bathroom. Is this normal with certain foods and do you think it will go away?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Yes, this is a serious question because I have NEVER had this happen with my other pregnancies. Yes, I did stop eating pickles since I know that currently make me sick. However, I crave them all the time and LOVE pickles and always have since I was little.

Oh Yeah~ I would crave a food and eat it until the next time I ate it and it made me sick. I did this with almost every food I could keep down! I grew up getting Stove Top stuffing as a treat, and when I was pregnant I ate 2 Costco boxes. To this day I still can't even smell it or it makes me sick!. So, this is completely normal, but it should pass after the baby; only once in a while does the food stay on the off list. Congrats on making it this far!

Is this a serious question? Your username is Mom to 4, so if you have 4 kids, don't you know the best option is to STOP eating what makes you feel sick? That's good for pregnant and not pregnant times.

So put down the pickle. Problem solved.

Is this a serious question? Your body changes when you are pregnant if you can't eat something then don't eat it. Prior to my pregnancy I didn't like jalapeños peppers or sauce when I was pregnant that's all I wanted and it stuck with me, now I put hot sauce on everything.

I got to where I couldn't stand the smell of Softsoap brand liquid hand soap. Still can't, 11 years after giving birth. Never bothered me before.

The only food I remember my body turning me against was coffee - even decaf. But that I quickly got over once I had each kid (thank goodness!).

Your body is trying to protect itself from the sodium and the acidity that comes from pickles. Unless you have a pickle addiction, this should be a very minor pregnancy problem. If you do have a pickle addiction, you've got problems ;-)

If you need some crunch, go buy some cucumbers.

This happened to me when pregnant with my daughter. I couldn't eat anything containing MSG. Unfortunately, this sensitivity is now permanent. Hopefully for you it will go away. You are probably just running out of room for food in your stomach!

It can be normal. Remember the longer along in your pregnancy, the smaller your stomach becomes. Also with your hormones going crazy, your body will reject certain things.

It may go away once the baby is born, or it may not..

Always follow the signs your body is giving you.

Eat less pickles. Your body needs balance. Loading it up with salt is bound to make muscles cramp and rebel.

I could barely eat anything during both my pregnancies. The second trimester with one of my kids wasn't too bad. The nausea subsided a bit. But honestly, I spent most of the first pregnancy feeling nauseous and most of the second pregnancy throwing up.

I wouldn't over think it. If eating pickles makes you sick, don't eat them. There's a very good chance you will be fine with them again when the pregnancy is over, but you won't know for sure until the pregnancy is over.

I found that the prenatal vitamins set my stomach up for acid reflux, so anything acidic on top of that only made things worse.
When I switched to a different prenatal vitamin (smaller pill that I could take twice a day instead of a horse sized pill that was once per day) my stomach felt a lot better and I could eat anything again.

I LOVED pickles before having my first child six years ago. Ate about a jar a week, drank the juice, etc. Had my daughter (did not crave them while pregnant with her) and the craving went away after having her! Got pregnant with my second child (a son) and CRAVED them while pregnant with him. Again, after having him, did not crave them. Am pregnant with my third and still have not gotten that old craving/love for pickles!!

I think our bodies have a way of changing what they crave/love based on what vitamins/minerals we are in need of. Maybe you were low in something that pickles supplied you with. I did not see how far along in your pregnancy you are, but that could have something to do with it combined with the amount of salt. Could be something else you ate, too!
