Easy Crafts for a Just Turned 2 Boy

My son just turned 2 and he likes to color or paint but I haven't really tried any planned crafts with him yet. I'm currently on modified bed rest (I'm 14 weeks along) so the crafts have to easy to put out and clean up. My little one isn't really ready for scissors but he may be ready for glue sticks. We've tried stickers but he likes to put them on himself more then the paper.

Any other activities that we can do that won't require much physical effort on my part would also be great. Right now we do a lot of reading, watching appropriate kids shows and movies, and playing trains. We've also had people come over to play but with the weather and swine flu going around we've sort of been laying low socially!

Thanks in advance for the great ideas!

I have a three year old and have been doing crafts with him for a while. His favorite is using the shape punches
(we bought a circle, snowflake, Christmas tree, triangle, and square. Occasionally we use glue sticks and glue the cutouts onto construction paper, but for the most part he is happy just punching out the shapes and playing with them. Some of the punches do not collect the punched out shapes, and other do. We use them to make bookmarks and things like that!

Another project my son loves is making masks. We use construction paper and just cut eyes out and glue on feathers and things like that.

We made ghosts for Halloween that we then hung from the tree out front. He LOVED that. We took cheap white fabric, covered a foil ball, and wrapped a pipe cleaner around the neck. Super easy and no mess!

We have also made Christmas ornaments. We did a few out of construction paper and then others where we bought a wooden frame and he colored the outside.

I hope these ideas help. Bed rest is not any fun. I am 36 weeks and have been having to take it easy for the last 4 weeks. I am not on bed rest, but still trying to come up with fun things we can do while still not over doing it. Best of luck!

I remember having to stay home with measles and making TONS of paper chains! We just had strips of paper and if your son likes to use a glue stick, he can be making decorations for all of your holidays!
He can also "decorate" the strips or put stickers on them. It's a good way to learn to count or do the alphabet as well. Just draw animals or things that start with each letter on the strips before they are glued.

Does it have to be a craft? I used to play a great game with my kids when I was pregnant. I'd sit or lay down on the couch/chair. When they'd come close to me, I'd catch them in between my legs and say "got ya". then when they escape I say "oooh, you got away....come back, come back so I can catch you".

Sometimes I try to grab them with a hand - sometimes missing on purpose but so close to catching them that they feel my fingers slide down their back.

This game involves a lot of running on the child's part. And you get to sit there and rest....you can even close your eyes once they start running further away.

HI A.!
Are you okay with him using a glue stick? We use one of those "I Can Paste" books for our 2 year old. I cut out the characters and she glues them to the page. She loves it and it's something we can do together.
Congrats on your pregnancy!

My friend hosts an activity blog for her kids. She has a 3, 2, and 8 month old, so the activities are age appropriate and fun for the kids. Some are easier than others, but most are done in about 30 minutes. The blog address is http://toddlerboredombusters.blogspot.com/

Good luck with your current pregnancy.

My little guy loved making cars and airplanes from a kit we purchased at JoAnn Fabric... in the kids craft section. You put planes together and take them apart, and the cars you get to glue parts on and can pull them off and start again. We got some of the googley eyes and put them on too and numbers and then "raced" them around the table.

My 2 year old loves stickers. Buy the ones that are big they have some that she really likes but I don't know what they're called. They're made of foam stuff. You could get color paper and hand him stickers to make his own picture. She's made really cute ones. Try it!!!
