Earache....any Advice for Relief

My son is 12, has just recently started having problems with his ears, its affecting his hearing and has had 3 earaches since our doctors appt. which was oct. 26...anyway doctor said he had congestion and fluid buildup behind his eardrum and long story short if it doesnt improve he will have to have tubes in his ears...he gave him an exercise to hold his nose, close off his throat and it should pop his ears, which had worked now it isnt...

Isn't there something out there that can be given to help this or is this the only alternative for helping his earache...anyone else had a problem like this would love to hear some suggestions...

Don't know if it would help to go back to this particular doctor as he told me there was nothing else to do but wait and see if it gets worse and then put tubes in. Am going to try to get ahold of a friend who is a P.A. and see if he has any suggestions.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE...i took him to see a friend who is a PA...he had me also look in his ears to see how terrible they looked, the left one he said was extremely bad...so we are going to another doctor monday afternoon to get further help...he gave him cingular for allergies, said some of it could be due to that, but they were so bad that he may need tubes anyway to correct it all...will learn more about that monday...also gave him some medicine to try to break it all up in there....

again thanks for all the suggestions, heat has helped but the similason ear drops did not do anything for his pain.

I haven't read all of the posts, but I wanted to tell you that there is a lot of research that shows how chiropractic helps with ear infections.

a great website is www.icpa4kids.org

I am a chiropractor in Overland Park, and I have seen many severe ear infections resovle without the need for tubes and anesthesia.

If it were me i would ask to see and ENT Doctor. when my children started having problems with their ears i asked to see the ENT and the doctor put them on medications for 3 weeks. however my oldest child is fixing to get her 3rd set of tubes in her ears. I would suggest to see this speacialist and see what they think. that is what i had to do

I just started having this kind of problem with my own ears a few years ago. Mine is allergy related. My doctor prescribed Allegra D. But I often just use Caratin or Sudafed. My doc recommended drinkign through a straw and chewing gun to help get the fluid moving through eustacion tubes.

I have ear problems to this day I am 27. If I get any Oklahoma water that is not clorinated I have an ear infection with in days. What I do when I get a flar up is put rubbing alcohol in my effected ear for about a minute. Then I let it run out and put a heating pad over my ear for a while. I try to do it as long as I can stand the heat. If I am watching TV I will put in on. I try to make sure someone is home just incase I fall asleep I don't want it to burn my face. It can if you have it really hot. Oh and make sure the heating pad is wraped in a towel to make it softer on your face and if you do fall asleep it wont be as bad.

Find another doctor immediately. Could be allergies as well. I love Dr. Bruce Pfeutze (not sure of spellling) He is connected with College Park family practice off of College & Quivera in Overland Park. Not sure where you live (?) They also have a PA, a woman, who is fantastic. I would also go to Wild Oats and talk with their vitamin specialist. There may be an alternative therapy you can try. Good luck. But don't let that young man suffer any longer!

Mucinex. As an adult my doctor tells me to take mucinex for build up of fluid and congestion. They recently came out with a childrens mucinex. It works great! It is over the counter, but of course you can speak with a pharmacist about it and his doctor, but I would definately try that and maybe another doctor.

My son had the same problems, ear infection after ear infection!!! He had tubes put in his ears and his tonsils and adnoids removed all in one surgery when he was 5 years old. No problems at all and it made a world of difference!!

Any other questions feel free to contact me!! :)

J. my 11 year old has had ear aches all of his life. I use ear drops when his ears start hurting it helps, but once a month he has to go to the dr. and get his ears drained.
Recentaly he had to get meds. for his ear ache as well has getting his ears drained. Heat also helps. It may not hurt to take your son to another dr. or even an ear specialist, they try not to put tubes in unless necesary. It never hurts to get a second opinion.

Good luck
J.

Check with Dr. Miriam Mills in Tulsa. She may be able to help him without using meds or tubes, but rather OMT. http://www.youngpeoplesclinic.yourmd.com/miriammills
