Hi Moma's, My 10 yr old step daughter has been complaining the last couple of days that her ears are popping when she swallows, yawns and burps. I read on another site that if she holds her nostrils shut and takes in a mouthful of air and then pushes the air to her nose (like she is blowing it) She will here a loud pop and it would be fine. Well she tried it and it hurt her ears really bad, although she did hear 3 loud pops it did not help. Not sure where to go from here or what this could be, any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Hi everyone, Thank you all so much for the great advice. We did try the warm water in a bulb syringe and my daughter said it was very soothing but only worked for a few minutes. We didn't see any wax come out though and we did try it quite a few times. So when her mother gets back to us with her insurance info, off to the ENT we will go. She has never had any problems with her ears before, and thankfully it does not hurt her it's just annoying. Thanks again. I'll keep you updated.

Hi C.:

I think you should take her to doctor to have her ears thoroughly examined. If there is a challenge, as an option, you can explore safe, gentle methods to address it, such as diet changes and Aromatherapy.

Take your step daughter to an ENT doctor (((ears, nose and throat specialist) to have her ears check out...
Don't treat or mess with her ears without knowing the cause of the problem first.

I actually just had a bought of this myself. Based on what you've said, my guess is your daughter probably has the same problem...a large amount of ear wax has lodged itself over the ear canal and is causing a build up of pressure. She won't be able to pop her ears without getting that wax cleared up. There's a couple of things you can try. First, you could try one of those over the counter ear wax removal kits. But that didn't help with me. I actually had to make a solution of equal parts rubbing alchohol, hydrogen peroxide and water which I then used to flush out my ears by filling a bulb syringe with the mixture and squirting it (gently) into my ears. It took several tries but pretty soon, the solution broke up the wax and cleared up the pressure problem! Here's a little "how to"...http://www.ehow.com/how_###-###-####_flush-out-ear-wax.html

for me I get that when I am dehydrated. She should drink lots of water and see if that helps.

Have her doctor check her ears for a build up of wax. He can clean them in a few minutes. That may alleviate the problem.

I would recommend taking her to an otolaringologist as it's most likely something silly - a liquid or pressure buildup of some sort that can be remedied easily.
Good luck!

Hi C.,
She may have fluid in her ear. I think the only thing you need to do is take her in to see the doctor and get her ears checked.

Hi: I am a 33 year old mother of a 2 month old and I have the same problem your daughter has. I have had bad ear dainage since I was little, I was actually deaf for a while. My ears would not drain the wax out so I had to go to an ENT and have them clean them out. I now still get the popping sounds. I wouldn't suggest the holding of the nose and blowing (even though I do that) becuase that just cloggs the ears more. I do use peroxide and that does work but if it is a lot of wax it will just swell it up. You can use the over the counter items but that does not always work. I suggest going to an ENT and having them do it. Honestly it does not hurt I actually think it feels good, just don't have them use the vacuum, that will cause some pain for a couple of days in the ear canal, but the scrappers and warm water is great. Hope this helps.

Have her ears checked. If she is in the pool alot it could be as simple as "wet" ears. (Thats my doctors terms.) Simply saying not infected(yet) but still anoying. Ear drops that dry the ear may help or ear plugs but make sure there is nothing wrong first before trying any OTC products. Ali
