My son just had a double ear infection and just finished taking all his amoxicillan about 2 days ago. Im noticing him still pulling at one of his ears though he does seem to have a tendancy to do this when he is tired. My question is is it possible for it to still be an ear infection this soon after finishing his meds???? Im a little concerned and thinking about taking him to his pediatrician.

What can I do next?

Hi LM,
Have you considered Chiropractic? My husband is a chiropractor and has had lots of success with children with chronic ear infections. Sometimes the body needs an adjustment to release the tension in the neck to clear the eustation tube. Please consider asking a friend or family member for a referral!
Good luck

Hi LM,

Have you thought about chiropractic care? My oldest had ear infection after ear infection until a friend recommended chiropractic. She only had two more infections in her life and they were short lived and she didn't need the antibiotics. Just FYI, the antibiotics will break down your son's immune system and the likelihood of another infection is common. The more antibiotics used, the harder to get rid of them. Also, antibiotics create yeast in the system and that will also break down the immune system as well. I would get him on a probiotic right away to make sure it doesn't go any further.

I was able to dodge the tubes that my pediatrician recommended and now that I know tubes create scar tissue and hearing issues later in life, I'm glad my friend bullied me into seeing her chiropractor. It was a God-send!

Regards,

M.

PS IF you don't know one, you can go to ucspine.com and find one with an upper cervical specialty in your area.

It is possible that there is still an ear infection, but also very probable that the fluid in the ear is no longer infected but just needs to drain out now - that can take many weeks. The only way to know for sure is to have the pedi look in his ear. When my kids were young, our pedi always had us do a follow-up visit to check (we had lots of ear infections). Once they got older and could say if their ear still hurt, he stopped the follow-up visit and said just call to come back for a check if they say its still uncomfortable. So I would ask the pedi to take a look. Good luck.

My daughter just had an ear infection. After 3 days of amoxicillin, she still seemed just as cranky as before treatment. I took her back to the doctor, and they put her on augmentin instead. 10 days later, she is fine. Different bacterial infections may not respond to a certain antibiotic. If you're worried, I would definitely go back to the pediatrician.

Yes, it is possible he needs more meds. My one daughter ended up going through 3 scripts to get rid of an infection a few years back.

I wouldn't dose him again. It's probably viral. Diet change worked for my kids amazingly. We eliminated dairy and it's made a world of difference.

Absolutely. The antibiotic may not have been strong enough to knock it out. Amoxicillan never worked for my son. Get a Re-check, then get your son on a probiotic. I can recommend one if you like, but do a little googling on ear infections and probiotics. My son suffered all through childhood and I knew nothing of this remedy. He has slight hearing loss. I sure wish someone had told me!

It can take up to six weeks for the fluid to drain from the ear, even after the infection is gone. Check with your doctor.

It's completely possible for there to be an ear infection. Amoxicillan, though once a powerful antibiotic, has weakened over time as bacteria have become more resistant.

Our daughter (2) has had tubes twice. There's something about how her ears trap fluid, make a perfect breeding ground for infections, and it's us chasing the infections. She was great when the tubes were in place, but when they naturally came out, the first time, the process started all over again.

FYI - if there is still an infection present, stand protocol is amoxicillan, Augmentin (GI side effects common), Omnicef (red stools common) and then a consult with an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist.

A word of advice! If your son needs to go on antibiotics again, especially if it is Augmentin, consider adding some probiotics to his food. There's a kids version of Culturelle (you can find it at the local drug store) that I used to just sprinkle into his bottle/sippy cup, and now I mix into yogurt or applesauce. It really helps with the GI side-effects.
