Ear Ache

This will probably sound odd to you, but I had horrible ear aches when I was young. So bad that I'd wake up crying. The funny thing is, I don't know what causes them or any home remedies. Mine got so bad I ended up having to go to the doctor and they prescribed some ear drops for me. I don't mean to scare you with this next part, but don't take her ear aches lightly. Mine hurt but when they would occur in the middle of the night I didn't want to wake my mom up and my ear drum ended up bursting. I can hear just fine now and can't tell but I had to have surgery. A friend of mine who is in her 50's had a bad ear ache problem, and her doctor told her to totally get off of dairy for two weeks. And that's all dairy - milk, cheese, yogurt...sorry all the good stuff. Also since my son is lactose intolerant and has been drinking soy milk since the day he was born two years ago, he has had not one ear ache yet. So I believe getting off all dairy is the way to go.

Ear aches are typically indicative of an ear infection. An ear infection is caused by the building of fluid in the inner ear. Sometimes the fluid is fine and bacteria doesn't grow and it will go away on it's own - typically those don't hurt, they just can make it difficult to hear. If you feel pain, typically there is a lot of fluid and it is infected and cause the ear drum to bulge and creates pressure, pain, loss of hearing and can cause equilibrium problems, dizziness, etc. If you think that you may have an ear infection, I would see a doc and get treated - you don't want your ear drum to rupture which can cause permanent hearing loss. My niece and my best friend's son both had ear drums rupture within 24 hours of ear pain. It can happen quickly and cause bigger problems down the road. Both of my sons have had frequent BAD ear infections and subsequently required tubes. Good luck!

I believe an ear ache can be caused by either a bacterial or viral infection. So, antibiotics won't work for all ear aches. I read an article that said most doctors just treat them all with antibiotics, but if your child has reoccuring infections, they should see an ear, nose and throat specialist who can diagnose exactly what is causing the problem. I had terrible ear aches as a child and ended up having my tonsils and adnoids removed. Never had another earache. Good luck!

I have heard of several things to elp with the pain but not cures.A couple of drops of olive oil in the ears or letting the person with the eareache rest on a hot water bottle wraped in a towel.Also I have seen some earache drops in the baby section of medicine isle at walmart and a couple of other places.Tylenol for the pain.If this is a child I would definitly take them to the doctor if it doesnt go away quickly.

My daughter was 2 when she got her first ear infection. The doctor told me it was because she was drinking milk right before she went to sleep. I told him that her head was elevated the whole time and he said it didn't matter, not to give her milk right at bedtime anymore. She has not had another one since (7 yrs. now). Also, allergies could be the reason, ciggarette smoke & outdoor.

I have always taken my son to a chiropractor. If you keep your body adjusted and aligned it will heal itself. All medicines do it fix the problem for a while and then it returns. I didn't know all of this with my oldest child and he had many ear aches my youngest has not. You may also want to try ear wax candles as they will pull out the infection.

My 3 yo never had ear infections as an infant. They just started about a year and a half ago. My pedi finally referred me to an ENT. Instead of resorting to tubes too quickly my ENT felt they were triggered by allergies. She has been taking Nasonex once a day and we haven't had any ear infections! Maybe something to look into!

The moment my kiddos complain their ear hurts, or they get the sniffles I drop a couple of drops of hydrogen peroxide in their ear and it clears them up. I have several friends who do this. Good luck!

I also used to have ear aches all the time. In 2006 I had 6 SEVERE ear aches. I would go to the emergency room almost everytime. A woman told me once that earaches are worst than childbirth. Now that I've had a natural birth I can agree that earaches are much worse! Anyway, I used to drink 3-4 glasses of milk a day. Finally in 2007 I quit drinking milk but I still each cheese, yogurt, etc. Since I've stopped drinking milk.. I have not had ONE ear infection, not one. I fully believe dairy has a lot do with them.
