you can get a separate dvr/tivo but it's probably not going to save you much...shop around you can often get free hd & dvr service as a new customer...also if you don't want to change you can often call & ask if there is any way to lower your bill or get a deal & often they will give you some kind of discount, if they dont keep calling & talk to someone else, haggling is the best way to get a better deal : )

you generally get one through your cable provider. We got the att u-verse where they give you the boxes and you can play your show back in any room. yes, its a little more expensive, but it is well worth it. their customer service is amazing and the guy that set up out boxes actually sat down with me afterward and SHOWED me how to work everything on our remotes until i had the hang of it so i wasnt trying to figure it out on my own.

I believe that is what Tivo is...a separate box that you can add to record shows...the cable box is just upgraded to include DVR, so it's not a separate box. Does that make sense? But to answer your question you can do either, what ever you want...a separate Tivo you buy at a regular store (usually @$100 + a monthly fee)OR go through your cable company and have 1 less box hooked up to your TV. I think you also have to think about the extra $ for the HDMI cables you will need if you want to take full advantage of your new HD TV...I believe these come standard when you go thru your cable company?

The only part I am unsure about is the Tivo, I am thinking this is just a 'name brand' and there are a few other DVR options you can purchase at the store like Sears, Best Buy, etc.

I think going thru the cable company will be cheaper because you don't have to spend the big bucks on the Tivo box, both require a monthly fee.

We have the HD and DVR through AT&T UVerse. We really love it! It can record 4 shows(not all in HD) at once, and pause live tv. Do you have any other cable or satellite providers that you can compare prices from? You could also call and ask if they have any promotions or coupons.

My husband says that it is possible to "build your own" DVR using a computer, but it sounds complicated even for him and he's a computer expert.

You can get Tivo but you have to buy the box then there's a monthly fee. I would go with the cable company. You can always cancel DVR if you don't want it in the future. We love ours!

We got ours through the cable provider as it is part of the cable box. LOVE, LOVE,LOVE my DVR. All my shows are taped as my son gets to watch his shows during regular hours. Best part opf DVR is fasy forwarding past the commercials!!!

You can buy one, just make sure your cable provider won't also charge you a service fee for the DVR whether it is from them or not. That wouldn't make it cost effective. It may be cheaper NOT to buy one. But, craigslist has them for a good price too!

Its best to go with your cable/satellite provider I think... that way if your dvr doesnt perform properly they will replace it. Love the dvr! It's awesome, so chances are you wont quit it after you get it, you'll get hooked on the freedom it allows for your viewing schedule. Tivo came out first, and the cable companies jumped on it soon afterwards. I don't know anyone that owns the Tivo---so I'm assuming going with your providers box is probably the better choice.
