Due to Deliver Any Day - but I Keep Losing Weight!

I'm due to deliver July 18th. I have toddler at home, she's 2 yrs and 9 months. My first pregnancy I had gestational diabetes, controlled throughout with diet alone. I only gained 14 lbs during that pregnancy, but it's because I was losing other body weight due to my sudden, drastic change in eating habits. This time I was a bit heavier to start out. I adopted the diabetes diet before I was even tested to see if I had it again, because I wanted to take care of myself the best I could. (Turns out, I don't have the diabetes this time, my blood sugars have been completely normal). However, I've lost over 20 lbs since month 4, and haven't gained anything. My doctor continues to reassure me that the baby is growing just perfectly, and that the weight loss was good for me since I was overweight to begin with. I wasn't enormous or anything, but probably 30-35 lbs over my ideal weight. He's always been the greatest doctor, right about everything, I completely trust him.

But I'm afraid that I'm going to have this tiny baby! As long as I'm eating the right foods, and reaching milestones at the right times, everything should be ok, right? I just wondered if anyone had any insight, or had also lost weight during pregnancy. Thanks to all for any help you might have!

Hi K.,

I had a similar issue last summer before my daughter was born. My son is now 3 1/2 and my daughter 9 months. When I was pregnant with her I lost about 50lbs!!! Yes, I had gained wait after my son was born, considering I only gained 14 lbs while pregnant with him. With my daughter, I ended up having galbladder problems and had to have it removed, I finnaly stopped loosing weight about 4 months ago, but I did not gain a pound while pregnant with her, she was born 2 weeks early at a healthy 6lbs 14 oz, so don't worry.

My sister-in-law lost weight at times with her pregnancies too. She'd put on a bit, taper, lose, and the cycle would continue. Overall, she probably gained about 12 lbs each prgnancy...and her babies were 8lbs3oz, and 9lbs3oz! I wouldn't worry at all!

I had Gest. Diabetes for both my pregnancies. My first pregnancy, I was diagnosed w/ Gest. Diab. at 28 weeks after usual Glucola test. I lost 20 lbs. in my 3rd trimester and my son was 10 days late, weighed 8 lbs. 1 oz. A year and a half later, I became pregnant w/ my 2nd son. I started testing my own blood sugars and sure enough, was again diabetic. It was confirmed through the Dr.'s test as well. I followed the carb-counting diet right away (at 5 wks. pregnant). I gained 5 lbs. throughout the entire pregnancy. My son was full term and weighed 6 lbs. 3 oz. My problem now is that not being pregnant (and never will be again), I don't have the same self-discipline or motivation to control my eating habits as when I was diabetic. It's an easy thing to do when you're doing it for your unborn baby, a very difficult thing to do when it's just for yourself. Good luck! -S.

Congratulations! I also had gestational diabetes. Lost weight during my pregnancy, I weighed less after delivering than before I started. I am almost 12 weeks now, and like everyone else, trying to be good with my eating so, if I am lucky, I will not have it again. I was actually insulin dependent with my first. I was very worried about losing weight, and my doctor, like yours, reassured me. She explained to me that I was losing weight, but the baby was taking everything that he needed. I was also sick a lot during that pregnancy, but again, she said that my immune system was compromised because he was taking all of the good stuff! It made sense to me, and he was 7lb12oz and very healthy.

Do not worry! My sister lost weight throughout both of her pregnancies. Her children were healthy and of normal size when they were born. Your doctor will tell you if something is wrong. I only gained 14 pounds with my first baby, and I had no issues such as diabetes. My daughter was fine and of normal size.

Relax and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

Hi K.,

First of all, congrats on baby #2! I also had gestational diabetes with both of my babies... very similar situation- didn't find out until later with my first, so I was very cautious with my second until we did the test (then found out I did in fact have it).

I know with both of them I had weekly nonstress tests and level 2 ultrasounds. Have they been doing those with this pregnancy? If so, I would say not to worry- those are pretty reliable... and if the baby showed any distress at all, I am sure he would put you on bed rest.

Truthfully, I think with having a toddler while pregnant, we never stop to gain weight! You are probably up and about so much, you probably burn everything right off!

Best of luck-

K.,
I wouldn't worry. I lost 30lbs with my second pregnancy. I carried full term and my baby weighed 7lbs 2oz. If you're eating healthy, had the extra weight to lose and your doctor said everything is fine, then just go with it and enjoy your new baby.

K.,
When I was pregnant w/my daughter, I didn't gain much for pounds. When I became pregnant w/my daughter, I started off a size 6 (I was sick until about the 4th or 5th month); During the pregnancy, I went to (maybe) a size 9 for the majority of the pregnancy. My OB/GYN's office assured me throughout the pregnancy that she was developing & gaining weight normally. Within days of deliving, I was back to wearing size 6 pants. I entrusted my health and that of my children, to my OB/GYN's office (they have like 5 doctors in there). All of my children came out healthy. I hope this helps you.

I am overweight and about 8 1/2 months pregnant with my second child. With my first pregnancy I lost a lot of weight. The doctor warned me that this might happen because I was overweight. I delivered a full-term baby who weight 6lbs 1 ounce and he is completely healthy. When I went for my post-partum visit I weighed less then I did before I got pregnant! Now I am pregnant again and again I haven't gained any weight. I keep flucuating between 1 lb... I will gain a 1lb and loose a 1lb. The baby is measuring small but I am reassured that everything is fine. If you are eating healthy and the doctor's aren't concerned then I wouldn't worry. Good luck with your new little one!! =) (whenever he/she decides to be born)

I wouldn't worry in fact be happy, this is good as long as you eat a healthy diet and eat when your feel you need to! I too was over weight when I got pregnant, and I began to eat healthier for my baby. I had gained ten pounds up to the five months mark, then I lost it plus five more pounds over the next four months of my pregnancy. My midwives and doctor all told me that the way it works is the baby takes what he needs from the food you eat and you get the left overs, so if your body needs extra calories to function that will come from stored energy(fat). I continued to eat healthy and drink lots of water, and I mean lots especially during the summer! I took my prenatal vitamins as told, a short walk daily and relaxed as much as possible. Last August after being 11 days over my due date I had a very healthy baby boy weighing in at 10 lbs 2.3 oz (By C-section, he was too big for me,I am only 5'1"). Then two weeks after the baby and I came home I weighed myself, I was 35 lbs lighter than my prepregnancy weight! My boy is still doing great! He is 11 months old happy, healthy, and strong. So don't worry as long as your Doc is happy with your progress. Good luck!
