Dry Scalp - Irvine,CA

My 4 year old son has a dry, flaky scalp. We recently had a family outbreak of head lice, and treated the problem with Nix. It has been a few weeks since everyone has been clear of the lice, but the dry, flaky scalp appears to persist in my son's hair. I am using Dr. Bronner's Tea Tree Oil and Hemp to deter future possible lice outbreaks. Has anyone had experience with Nix causing dry scalp? What should I do to fix it? I see flakes of dry skin which causes immediate panic to me, gladly it's only dry skin, but I'd like it to go away.....

What can I do next?

My experience is that Dr. Bronner's can be very drying. Are you using the liquid castille soap? You know, the regular stuff? If so, I would discontinue that immediately. As an adult, I can't use it on my skin undiluted, so I imagine it's the same with a child.

There are a couple of alternative options, though. You can add a few drops of tea tree oil to any shampoo. Or you can use the Dr. Bronners that you already have to make your own shampoo. 1/3 C Dr Bronners, 1/2 C coconut milk (like from a can), 1 tsp olive oil, 10 drops essential oil of your choice. Combine and shake. Shake well before using and use about a quarter-sized amount. Makes a great shampoo. Although if you already have the tea tree oil Dr. Bronner's, you could skip the essential oil altogether.

Hope this helps.

How often are you washing his hair? The tea tree oil should be moisturizing the scalp. Are you rubbing it into the skin? I would not wash his hair any more often than once/week until this clears up.

I just learned about dry oil from a hair dresser. She used it on my hair to give it more body but she said it's really good for a dry scalp. It goes on oily but dries quickly and did not leave my hair oily. It is expensive but a little goes a long way.

Bronner's is SUPER drying. I give my kids Nordic Naturals fish oil and PB8 - as I find much of the skin issue are due to the body being out of balance. The fish oil helps with keeping the skin healthy, but the PB8 balances out bacteria in the body.

I wash my hair every single day and the only Bronner's I use is the unscented baby mild and I only use that 2x/week on my body....but I apply pure grape seed oil on my face as a moisturizer....no parabens and chemicals for me.
