Dry Diapers in Morning

Hi Mommies-
My 2 year old son has had a couple of pretty dry diapers in the morning when he 1st wakes up. Over the weekend the urine that was in there was very yellow so I'm concerned that he's dehyrated. He's acting ok...he's not acting like something is bothering him or he's not feeling well. Usually his diaper is SOAKED when I first get him out of his crib. We are starting potty training so I wonder if he could be holding it already...he's peed just a couple of times on the potty and hasn't pooped yet. I have been very laid back with introducing the potty...
He has been very attached to his "baba" also and I have only been giving him a small bottle with water in it only at bedtime. He drinks from a sippy only at his daycare as has been doing that for awhile now. It's just a comfort thing at home. Now it's getting to the point where he's not really drinking much water at bedtime so do you think that's why his diapers haven't been as wet in the mornings lately? If he was dehydrated or had some kind of infection would he show any other signs? I'm just used to seeing a 20 pound diaper in the morning :)...can anyone ease my mind? Thanks!

What can I do next?

It is possible that he is relieving himself enough before bedtime, but I would still think there would be some in the diaper. We are also going through the potty training and after naps, he is usually dry but not in the morning.
If you are concerned, increase his fluids. Does he drink milk or water with dinner? Ours has water with his meal, and a cup of milk right afterwards.
If he is still going pee through out the day on the potty or in the diaper, don't worry too much.
Does he potty right when he wakes up in the morning? If so, then he is simply holding it.
Increase his fluids and if that does not improve, I would call your dr. Dehydration can be scary.

Right after Micah started potty training, he started waking in the morning with either a dry diaper or a diaper with a single morning pee in it (I could tell because I used cloth). Then, he would go to the potty right after we got out of bed. (Is your son urinating in the potty when he wakes?) After a week of discovering this, I stopped putting him in a diaper at night -- he was just holding it. He has been night trained only 3 weeks less than day trained.

As long as he seems to be urinating enough during the day, I wouldn't be concerned. After a night of no liquids and holding his bladder all night, it makes sense that his urine would be more concentrated in the morning. If you are really worried, you could kick up his liquid consumption during the day. Though I don't think that I would change the liquid consumption at night as it seems like this would be a great time to get him out of night diapers. It has been over 3 months for us without a single nighttime accident.

ETA: With dehydration, you would also see a lack of saliva in the mouth and a lack of tears or wetness on the eyes.

dehydration is a serious issue....but, dry morning diapers are "what" parents look for when potty training! In fact, to aid this, many parents limit drinks past a set time in the evening. If he's not showing any signs of stress, if he's drinking normally during the day....then allow him to mature & hit that next developmental benchmark.

And!!! If he's using a cup at daycare, then it's time to eliminate that bottle. I know this sounds cold & harsh, but your son is two.....that's (for the most part) one year past when most children give it up! And speaking from a dental/speech developmental standpoint (6 years in the field), removing that bottle at home will aid in muscle development needed for proper speech & long-lasting dentition positioning. I wish you Peace!

Your "baby" is growing up to be a big boy! Time to move out of those diapers and get a toddler potty! He is ready!
