Dry Clean Only Rug

I have an area rug that is can only be dry cleaned. My son spilled a lot of milk on it yesterday, and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for cleaning it. The carpet itself feels very silky; I am not sure what kind of material it is. I would rather not spend so much money on getting it dry cleaned. Thanks!

Hi S.,
Why don't you use a dry cleaning home kit. I have used them before in a pinch and they work pretty good.
Good luck

I would also recommend getting it dry cleaned if it is wool. I washed - and ruined - my wool rug. The colors run, the fabric ends up stretching and shrinking to look completely mangled, and in my case, it took 1 full week for it to dry.

Biokleen Bac Out. Buy it online or at Whole Foods, Wild Outs, and other natural food stores. So safe I use it on cloth diapers!

Hi S., I agree that dry cleaning is expensive and I have heard they use water too. I do not know what your rug is made of and the silky-ness may be lost in washing. You may try to rent a steam cleaner. My oldest son has one a swears by it. They have a little dog who has had some accidents and also they clean the rugs after parties. Good luck, A.

It sounds like a silk rug. I ruined one of mine by attempting to spot clean it myself. Have it done professionally if you can.

how big is the rug? can you use Dryel in the dryer?

I had a friend who had a dry clean only rug and it got spots on it from her cat - she took it to get it cleaned - and it came back worse than it was and she ended up getting rid of it! My grandmother (whose grandfather??? had a cleaning business) always says to use hydrogen peroxide - that that's what the cleaners start with. I would try seltzer - and dab - don't rub at any part of it - do it outside so the milk and seltzer can get out of it. I'd also try the peroxide and see how it works. Now - if this were my rug - I would seriously try oxyclean or my steam cleaner. Those are my standby's for everything - but I don't want to ruin your rug! But, I got red wine (dried) out of my wool area rug (that is a darker color overall - but it came out of the off white areas just fine) with oxyclean solution and just rinsed it out really well. Good luck!

And - thank you and your husband, and family for your sacrifices and never-ending hard work for this country. I hope your husband is safe and hopefully home! And I hope these wars end quickly (and efficiently) and the troops can be home with their families that sacrifice so much during these times! God Bless!

if it says dry clean only, i wouldnt chance it trying to clean it myself. my suggestion, move the rug to a room where your son wont be near it! i took my good rug out of my playroom/family room and kept the one in my living room but that room is gated off so my son cant get in there to ruin the rug!!
