Drop Side Crib

Now that they are "outlawing" drop side cribs, what am I supposed to do with mine? It's a high quality crib that I don't want to just throw away. We are finished having kids and my daughter is about to move into a bed. Any moms with drop side cribs have any advice?
I just wanted to add that I have read that it is illegal to sell a drop side crib AFTER June 2011. Is that not right?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies! We contacted the manufacturer and now we're hoping to get the parts to make it a safe crib. Then we'll be able to donate it or sell it.
As for Ed, what in the world are you talking about?

It is just ridiculous isn't it? - just another example of nanny states telling us what we can and cannot use. Generations of babies have used these cribs with no problems, My daughter just grew out of hers, now I have a $1000 crib which I can't sell or get rid of, or even give away.

Most companies are making kits so that you can convert your "drop side" crib into a solid side crib. No reason to get rid of the crib entirely if you can convert it.

Like others said, a fix kit would work (just be sure to tell new owner not to use the drop side) and any resell of the crib is illegal. We ended up taking ours to Babies R Us during one of their trade-in days (the next one will be in the fall; they usually do it 2x's a year). You then get 20% off a stroller, car seat, crib and perhaps a few other things. I figured the store would know how to dispose of my dropside but I do suspect that it's just in the landfill now.

call the manufacturer of the crib and get a stabilizer so that it can't drop anymore.

I am "not 100% sure" but I think is not legal to sell things that have being recall in Craigslist (like drop side crib).
Why not change it to a No Drop side crib by securing that side and make it a normal crib?
I am mot good in this apartment but I would think it is possible, then I would give it to a friend or family that is thinking on having kids but I would let them know what I did to the crib.

Drop side cribs are illegal bc they are unsafe & have all been recalled. It should not be donated or sold to anyone! It sounds very uneducated for people to argue the point that drop-side cribs have been around for many years blah blah blah. Many babies have died as a result of these cribs. Period. Is it really worth the couple bucks you get for it, to sell a potentially dangerous baby item?? Dispose of it, or return it to Babies R' Us. OR... if you really feel you NEED to make some money off of it... then convert it to a toddler bed only & sell it that way.

You give the crib away you open yourself to a big lawsuit. Is it worth losing your house because you sold or gave a crib away knowing it was against the law. Don't say you did not know the law it's no excuse in court'

I would try craigslist or ebay... You might even think of donating it. I know that I will frequently see mothers on Craigslist who can't afford to buy the stuff they need (asking for good deals or donations), so if you aren't looking to make any money you could give or sell it cheap to one of them.

Donate it to a needy family or a shelter of sorts. People at the shelters will know if they are able to use the crib or not.

I agree with Jane. Contact the manufacturer and get the kit to fix it. Then you can try to sell it or give it away without worry that something could happen. We are giving our crib to my bil & sil but I wouldn't give it to them till I got the kit.

As painful as it was, my friend burned hers in her backyard firepit (probably not the best for the environment, w/ toxic paints & the like...). You can't give it to women's shelters or any other "donation" place like that, and you don't want to risk giving it to a friend and something happening to their child...

I was considering trading mine in at Babies R Us for some other item. At least you get 25% off something else. You don't have to use it for another crib.

mine is a convertable so i plan on getting rid of the "rail" and just selling it or using it as the toddler bed or the full size bed.

I also would think that if it was "converted" to not be a drop rail anymore that it should be fine, but i don't know if that's legal or whatever.
