Drinking Bath Water

Does anyone else have a problem with their child drinking bath water?
My daughter drinks a lot of water and it’s at every bath. I am guessing over a cup – at least it seems like it.
Even when I add bubbles to her bath it doesn’t slow her down.
I’ve tired giving her a sippy cup before a bath. I’ve taken all the “cups” out of the bath. When I did that she just put her face down and drinks that way. Or she’d put her hands in the water and then licks them.
I just think it is so gross when she does it. Plus, I can’t imagine it’s healthy for her.
She also sucks on the washcloths. Which is gross too, but I can take that away from her.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for making me feel better that my daughter isn’t the only one doing this!

I have tried a few of the tips – she takes a sippy cup of water in the bath and I let the water trickle out of the faucet (unfortunately, the way our faucet is, it’s only cold water). And those things keep her from drinking so much bath water. I am thinking of getting a hand held shower. Which I figure will help me wash her hair too.

Next doctor’s appointment I plan on asking her about it.

Thanks you so much for your ideas and support!
L. :)

OMG - my 9 mos old daughter did this for the first time last night too! I was worried b/c bath water isn't the CLEANEST, but I couldn't get her to stop!! I did the same thing, take the cup out etc. She also sucks on the wash rag too. I don't remember my son doing this! Hopefully she will stop. If you find something to work, please share!

Nothing wrong with bath water. I swear my daughter learns to hold her breathe drink from her cup doing this. Babies n toddlers could bathe in plain water so you hardly need a dab at all for baby all over. Otherwise there are safe baby soaps. Not everyone considers this... soaps and chemical fragrances you put in the water goes through our skin to begin with. Choose safe stuff with no worry.

I'm so glad other moms think this is gross! My stepson (now 9) used to do this when he was around 3. It completely grossed me out, but my husband and my stepson's mom thought it was funny.

It's a phase and she'll grow out of it. I discouraged my stepson, but I didn't have any success. Now he takes a shower, so he can drink all he wants! :)

My daughter, who is 19 months, still does this at least a few times a week. The more I tell her not to, the funnier she thinks it is to do it. I am hoping it is just a phase

Hi Lola,

My 2 yr old still does it and yes I think it is gross but I try to keep the tub as clean as possible. He has gotten a little better as time has went on. I think now he does it for a reaction so I have been trying to ignore it. He laughs and tell me that it is gross. At one point he would refuse to get out of the tub even after I let the water out and he would be on his belly trying to suck any water he could from the "bottom" of the tub. THAT WAS GROSS!! I am just hoping the novelty wears off soon with my ignoring the behavior.

Good luck!!

My son use to do the same exact thing. I couldn't even let him bring in his legos because he was using those. I just had to keep on popping him on his hand and telling him "no". I explained to him what could happen. She might only be one, but she needs to know why she can't. I hope she stops soon! That is sick, and I cringed every time he did it. Take care and keep us informed.

Hello Lola,
My 18 month old loves taking baths, and she also drinks her bath water. She will suck on the wash cloth if she gets a hold of it before me. I at that point simply get another one until I am done washing her. Once I wash her I drain the tub and rinse her off. Once she is rinced off and clean, I refill the tub and let her play. She lays on her belly and tries to swim and then will put her face down to drink the water. Or fill her toys up and take a drink. It's fresh water and she is after all clean so I don't feel she is getting dirty water.
How this helps give you a peace of mind.

Yeh my almost 3 year old still does this and I cannot figure out how to stop him from doing it. Even if he has water before he does it. Just something kids do I guess and growing out of it takes time it seems.
Good luck to you with this one.

My 20 month old daughter has been doing the same thing for months. The only solution I came up with is to let the water trinkle out of the faucet very slowly during bathtime. My daughter knows that the only water she is allowed to drink is the fresh water coming out of the faucet. She has a cup that she'll hold under the trinkle and she'll wait until it's full to drink it. It makes me feel a lot better knowing that she is not drinking her "dirt", soap, or even pee (you never know if they are peeing!). This has also worked for my nephew who is a bath tub drinker. I hope this helps you out! Good luck!

My 22 month old son does this too. I think it is gross too, but he hasn't gotten sick or anything. When he sucks the washcloth I yank it away, say "ICKY!" in a teasing voice and toss it onto his head. He laughs and we play the game for a while until he forgets about sucking the washcloth. When he drinks out of the cups I grab the cup, say "ICK" in a teasing way and dump the water in the cup on his head. He laughs and we move on to something else.

My daughter is 1 also and she does the same thing. I try and use the hand held sparyer a lot and let her drink from that to keep her from drinking the bath water and sucking on the wash cloth. Good luck. -E.

My kids do that too. (two girls ages 4 1/2 and 1 1/2) I always tell them not too, since she is drinking all of the filth that just washed off of her body, so now they spit it out! I'm not sure whats worse?!? And the sodium laurel/laureth sulfates that are in most washes and shampoos, are pretty much the equivalent of industrial de-greasers. I wouldn't want to drink that.

My kids do that too. I don't think that anyhing will happen. I know it sounds gross, but I remember doing it too when I was little. If your worried about it, try giving her a sippy cup in the bath, or let the water run out of the faucet a little bit. You could ask the doctor about it. As far as the bubbles go, it won't hurt her to ingest them, but if she got too much, she might get diareah (sp?). Good luck. Hope this helps!!

My daughter does it every once in a while, she has definitely stopped doing it as much as she used to. I think it is just a phase and while it is gross, it doesn't hurt them. I just tell her that we don't drink the bath water and laugh a little and give her a toy to change what she is doing. My boys also did it and they are both healthy and never did get sick. If you don't make a big deal out of it, she may stop sooner or not do it as often...that works well. :-)
