My son is 16 months old and was almost exclusively nursed for a year unless there was a sitter, etc. We could only introduce cow's milk through a bottle at that time and he is still using a 1 or 2 because I refuse to buy more nipples - I hope he'll take it from a cup soon! Doesn't bother him but I have heard that it's easier to transition kids to a cup by cutting a hole in the nipple (didn't work for us) so maybe a larger nipple would help with that. Is your child frustrated with the bottle? You might want to try a sippy or move up with the nipples in that case.

We waited until our son showed signs that we needed to move up. He would act impatient or get fussy while eating, like he wasn't getting it fast enough. He also has that kind of personality...he isn't afraid to ask for what he wants.

We moved from 1 to 2 when it was taking him forever to finish a bottle...like upwards of 1/2 hr because he just couldn't get thru 8 oz of formula fast enough. I think it was around 5/6 mos. We never did size 3 nipples, just transitioned him to sippy cups from there.

Every baby is different... I think it's really a matter of how long it takes for your little one to eat. My son is 5 months old and we still use level 1 because he is such an aggressive sucker... he wolfs his food down so fast..... (I wish they made a nipple smaller than level 1) However, my friend's baby was using level 2 since the first week because he couldn't get much formula with level 1. (It was taking them over an hour to feed him)
The package recommends switching to level:
2 at 3 months
3 at 6 months
4 for more aggressive eaters
Y cut for thicker liquids
Good luck!

Typically 0-3mos is stage1 3-6 stage2 and over 6 mos is stage 3. But if your baby can't swallow that fast stay with smaller stage
