Hello all,

I currently have a 21 month old daughter and when she was born i used the Avent bottles. I am not 7 months pregnant and am about to register within the next couple of weeks. I have heard a lot about the Dr. Brown's bottles and am wondering if they are any better then Avent? I have noticed that they are a little more expensive and am not sure if it is worth spending the extra money on. Please any advice good or bad experiences. Thank you.

What can I do next?

I used both the Avent bottles as well as Dr Brown's bottles. Dr Brown's definitely helped w/the colic but not too much on the spitting up since it was more severe(acid reflux) I would just stick w/the Avent bottles and wait to see what kind of baby you have.

Good Luck.

Hi C.,

I would probably wait until your daughter comes and see if she likes and does well with the Avent bottles. Because if she does, it would be easier and cheaper than buying all new bottles. I did that and my second son did great with Avent, so I didn't have to buy new bottles.

Congratulations on your 2nd baby girl!

We used Dr. Brown's and for the most part bottles are bottles, and what you & your baby prefer.

My son was a spitter, and had gas issues ... EVEN with Dr. Brown's. It really made no difference. So, I just used them with gripe water, and everyone was happy with spit-up on their shirts! :)

We LOVED them! My son would refuse the Avent nipples, but the Dr Browns were perfect. I saw that someone said theirs didn't last, but we didn't notice that problem. My son had the same nipples on his bottles for the whole year that he used them. We never even had to buy new ones. I will say that I was nursing at all times when he was home with me, but during the day, he had bottles when I was at work, so maybe we didn't use them as much. We didn't have any problems with gas or colic. Good luck in your decision, and CONGRATULATIONS!!

What I would suggest is maybe registering for both, and give your new baby one of each to see which one your baby prefers. Then, take the others back to exchange for the preferred brand (excluding the one you already used of course. . lol).

My son had reflux and when I wasn't nursing, we started off with the Avent bottles, but then my son didn't want those. I had asked his pediatrican about the Dr. Brown's bottles and told me not to waste my money. He said that it all depends on your baby. Turns out, ours would only take the cheap Evenflo bottles.

Hi,

I got the Dr. Brown bottles because my kids both were very "gassy." I don't know if they worked really because I didn't use a whole lot of other bottles to compare them. The reason why I am writing is to suggest that you register for both (a few Dr. Browns, say 3 0-3 month, and some Avent). That way you can compare.

The avent are nice since they can convert to sippy cups later and their hand held breastpump works really well as long as you boil all of the pump parts before using it.

Two more things about Dr. Browns: they have more parts and take longer to clean and and I found that they leaked. I put up with all of that because I hoped I was helping my kids gas pain, but I really don't know.

I have heard good things about the soothie bottles, like the pacifiers that hospitals give out. I didn't get to use them since my kids were done with bottles when these came out, but you may want to register for a few of these bottles, too.

I have never tried the avent bottles but I do use Dr.Browns and I love them. My son had lots of problems with spitting up and gas (we used playtex) when we switch to Dr.Brown the problems stopped. I think they are worth the extra price. I have lots of friends that use Dr.Browns too.

Good Luck!

I never used Avent either but can vouch for Dr. Brown's! Like the other moms, it helped our daughter tremendously. She was an 8 week preemie and we had to put thickener in her milk because she was aspirating it into her lungs. She never spit up or had any issues. It's worth the extra money and time to clean up.

C.,

Ditto on what Jill just said. The Dr. Brown bottles really helped my daugher with the gas situation...and she never spit up with them. I also kept her on the slow flow nipples for a very long time, which seemed to help. I have never tried Avent. I do know that my care provider really likes them for some reason....probably less to clean since Dr. Browns has pieces and parts. I feel its worth cleaning a smidge more for my sweeties comfort.

Hi,

With our oldest son we used Avent and I did not like them b/c they leaked. With my middle son we used Dr Browns and he still was a bad spitter upper and it is time consuming to clean them with all the parts, and I had problems every once in a while with leaking. With our 8 month old I have been using the Soothie bottles. These are great! They have the same nipple as the pacifiers that the babies are given in the hospital and I have had no problem with leaks or the nipple collapsing in the entire 8 months.

Hope this helps!

I used avent bottles and they were GREAT; however, I know that if you have a baby with gas or spit up problems, Dr. Brown bottles are better, so it reallys just depends on what kind of baby you have. Dr. Brown bottles are much more of a hassle to clean, so beware...

If you already have Avent bottles, stick with those and only buy the Dr. Brown bottles if you need to.
