Doggie Diabetes

Our sweet American Eskimo dog, who is 12, was diagnosed with Canine Diabetes this summer. We have had a difficult time balancing his blood sugar - complicated by his picky eating! I am not at all satisfied with the way our regular vet has been treating him, as he doesn't communicate well. I am desperate to find a vet that specializes in doggy endocrine systems in the Orange County area. We live in Huntington Beach, near Newport. This dog is the beloved pet of our 22 year old - her confidant all through high school! Please, if you know of anyone......Thanks, L.

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the referals - I am still looking for a "specialist" but am going to try one of the vets my "Mamas" recommended in the interum. This is the best website! LL

Been there. The only true specialist for this is in Newport Beach on PCH and his name is Dr. Jeff Cohen. He is a miracle worker and very honest. We started going to see him about 8 years ago for a similar problem with our dog who also had Cushing's Disease. His phone is ###-###-#### and he's there on Saturdays which really helped us. Good Luck, Cindy

There is an animal hospital/vet place in I think it was in Tustin, off the 5 freeway, I want to say it was the Jamboree off ramp, on Edinger. We had to take both of our pugs there, one time when the older one got really sick and had to have blood transfusions, which I didn't even know they could do on dogs, and the other time when our other pug broke his leg after getting caught behind a huge potted plant in our backyard. Both times, they were fantastic with our dogs and took all the time we needed to explain everything and answer any questions we had. If I remember right, in the center where they were located, there were several offices that dealt with animals with special health problems. Ok, I found it. It's called ACCIM ###-###-#### The actual name is Advanced Critical Care/Internal Medicine They weren't cheap, but we really liked them. Harry broke his leg about 5 yrs, ago and is still doing great. Good luck & I hope this helped. C.

L., Have you tried All-Care in FV located off of Ellis. They treat all type of animal diseases and have a wonderful staff. I have my dog Barkley in there twice. The first time we had just brought him home as a puppy and he got deathly ill, we thought we going to lose him. But within 2 days he was back and they treated him so good. The second time he swallowed what looked like the end of a walking cane and he had to have surgery. The doctors there treat Cancer and have a surgeon that works on the Alaskan Dog sled teams. I highly recommend them.
I hope everything works out.

I volunteer at my local animal shelter and having seen so many lovely older dogs abandoned its very heart warming to hear someone who is devoted to their dog’s wellbeing. I am sorry I don’t have a specific recommendation for you. I did contact another very knowledgeable rescuer about this. She said that since diabetes is a common illness for dogs that many vets are well informed about it. Finding a vet that you communicate well with is very important and worth shopping around for. My vet is in Los Alomitos and she does a wonderful job. Perhaps if you put another question on this site looking for a good vet in your area you will get a better response. Email me if you would like my vets number.

My vet for the last 20 years or so is Dr. Naito at Pet Vet. She's on Beach and Adams and she doesn't charge a fortune like a lot of the doctors do. I have never seen any of the other doctors in that office -- only her and, my family takes their animals to her too. When I was younger she would actually only charge me what I could afford even when it was less than her standard charge. We all love love love her. I'm not related to her and I don't know her in any personal way -- I just love the way she treats animals and people.
Good luck
