Dog Urine Smell

Does anyone out there know of a solution that gets the smell of dog urine out of rocks? We have trained our dog to do her business in our landscaping rocks as her urine burns our grass. The problem is that the urine just gets absorbed into the landscaping fabric and stinks. Hosing it down and a good rain doesn't seem to help, just makes it worse.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to clean up this stinky mess I would be most grateful!

Thanks!

Sunshine sterilizes most anything. That said, going through the trouble to remove all rocks to let the sunshine at the fabric... I'd just replace it or get rid of it. I don't know how you'd correct this wthout getting rid of the fabric.

I use BioDeodorizer it gets rid of odors. I have used it on drain lines, pet beds, carpet, litter boxes and my gardens. I use it because it is non-toxic, fully biodegradable and it has so far work great for me.

Now I don't know if this would take care of your problem, it is possible that you might have mold.

The best thing I found to take out the smell is OdoBan. It works great.

According to the Borax box, it's good at getting animal urine out. I bet a solution of Borax sprayed on the rocks to soak into the landscaping fabric may be helpful.

Worst case scenario, contact a company that does lawn care (such as Scotts/Chemlawn) and see what they recommend. I'd bet it's not as uncommon a question as you might think.

My guess is that it's not the urine that's the problem but mold/mildew that are growing on the landscaping fabric from the areas in which the dog's urinated.

Vinegar is a great de-odorizer, and so is baking soda. I probably wouldn't mix the two, though, unless you want to turn your rocks into volcanoes :)

I've never tried cleaning rocks, but I've tried cleaning carpets, and I like a product called Nature's Miracle. You can get it at Petsmart, Petco, or online. It's pricier than some other products, but I honestly think it's worth every penny! If I were you I'd get a small container of it and try it in a section of rocks, following the directions. If it doesn't work, you might talk to a nursery or a landscaper. The problem might be something other than your dog's necessary business! (For a while we had shrubbery that gave off a fragrance close to "eau de cat." Drove me crazy.)

I know it works for indoor stuff and I'm not sure how saturated the area is, but I find citrus to be the best for oders as it is natural and I don't find the oder offensive. Try some lemon juice. I know some pet stores carry concintrated orange stuff for pet oders, but so far a little lemon has gone a long way.

I am dealing with this right now... I will check out some of the answers below and perhaps get some new ideas. However right now we have just been using Vinegar.... It doesn't take it all away, but it does help.
I rinse the rocks down and then pour it over the main areas.
I was going to try ammonia next and just mix that in some water and see how that does.
Good luck! I hope we both find something that works.

Yes, there is a natural enzyme product that is animal and child and environment safe.

It is called Bac-Out made by Biokleen

We get ours from our grocery store. However, healthfood stores or online are good options too. I know you can buy cases of it from amazon.

I'm ultra cheap, so I must say that I love vinegar (it takes the odors out of everything, and once rinsed, the smell of vinegar is gone too), just spray on and rub it a little, I bet. Or you can make a baking soda paste and scrub lightly with an old toothbrush if the vinegar doesn't work. That's how we always cleaned dog urine out of carpets.
