Hi Everyone. My name is M. and I wanted to ask everyone if you have ever had a problem with your dog like I am having with mine and also to ask if you know where I can seek affordable care. I have a 13 yr old Beagle/terrior mix. She is a GREAT dog. I was behind on her rabies shots so I took her to petsmaet on their wellness day where they give the shot and don;t charge for anything else. Well ever since then she has not been eating or drinking and is just laying around, very sad. I brought her back and they are not sure what is wrong but gave us antibiotics and pain medicine in case she has a bad tooth. So far that has not worked either. I knw she has bad teeth and very bad breath but to get teeth pulled is way more then we can afford right now, Around $500.00.
I am worried about her and need to find out what is wrong without costing me a fortune going back and forth every other day as funds for us are really tight right now. If anyone can help or has any suggestions for me I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you

So What Happened?

Thanks Everyone. My dog is doing better. I took her back in on Monday and got her a saline injection. It seemed to help and she started drinking water. Yesterday she started taking table food, which I was happy about about as she had not eaten anything in almost 4 days. I'm hoping today she will eat her dog food. All in all she seems to ge getting better :)

Animal Welfare League in South Chicago does dentals for around 120.00. I am not sure if that includes extractions. They also do blood work and xrays at a lower fee. There prices are on their web-site. That may help to investigate what is causing her problem.

The down side is that you may have to wait 3 hours before you see a doctor depending on how busy it is.

Good luck

You could try the Anti-Cruelty Society. They have a clinic, ###-###-#### ext. 350 or 351 and you could call to see if you qualify for the services. Or maybe they have a number you could just call for advice.

A friend told me you might also be able to contact PAWS for help finding a low cost clinic, if not free. They usually help people help their pets.

Hi M.~
Sorry to hear about your dog - we have two akitas and they are like our children. I hope he is healthy very soon! My husband always takes our dogs to a vet at 5837 W. Chicago Ave. I believe it is near Austin and Chicago. I don't know how the doctor stays in business with the prices he charges - compared to other places we use to use. I think most times my husband goes it - it is about $50 and that is usually with checkup, pills, etc... Really it is not believable.

Kind Regards~
H.

If she isn't drinking either you need to make sure it isn't a kidney issue. Not eating would make sense if her teeth are hurting her, but she should still be drinking. Good luck, it looks like people have some good advice on where to take her.

honestly, the longer you wait, the higher the cost could be. take her to a vet and explain your money situation and they will work with you (and if they wont, find a different vet!!) Do what is best for the dog and get him some medical help!

Most vets will work with you and give you options. I would go in and let them know that money is an issue right off the bat. Make sure they understand that you want options. Ask for 3 different choices (1 would be a complete set of bloodwork and xrays and ultrasound for example, 2 would be blood work and xrays 3 would be just a small blood panel). Obviously what the choices are would depend on your dog and the exam. Our vet Dr. Sherman is great and really works with us. Shes at Petvets in Oak Park. My dogs and cats are old and I used to work in a vet. I would love to be able to do everything, but we aren't financially in that situation right now. When I bring them in I ask what difference will this test/treatment make. My cat had either inflammatory bowel disease or stomach cancer. We were given the option of doing multiple test to figure out which. I asked what the difference would be in treatment. The only difference might have been costly chemo that probably wouldn't have extended his life just his pain. We opted to not put him through all the tests and manage his pain/symptons until it no longer was ok for him. Obviously this is a very specific situation and my not apply directly. Any vet you go to should provide you with an estimate BEFORE they do any tests. Be prepared to give them all the medical history you have, that sometimes help to elimate some testing (but not always). I apologize for going on and on. If you'd like more info please let me know. Oh- there is also something called CareCredit. It's a credit card- but it has options for interest free for a certain length of time if you spent a large amount (like 12 months interest free if you charge $1000 or something). It can be REALLY helpful in an emergency. I think some dentists accept it as well.
