Does Your Toddler Take Their Pants/diaper off in Crib?

Three times this week, I heard my 18 mos old wake from nap but I let her play for a bit, when I went in she had taken off her pants, diaper and peed and pooped in the crib! omg! Anyone else dealt with this and what worked? she didn't appear to know she did something "wrong" and was just hanging out....

What can I do next?

Haha, been there, so gross, I felt like a had a monkey at the zoo, flinging poo! I told her that was not OK, and safety pinned her footsie pajamas and taped over the pin...no more issues.

If I had to clean "poop" from a crib ONCE, I guarantee they'd be sleeping in a onesie or overalls or whatever else it took until they were potty trained.
I also would think that this is a beginning signal that she is ready to start learning to go to the potty. My youngest took his diaper off at 16 months so we started leaving the bathroom door open so he could see us go potty. Now, at 17 months, he's not potty trained (I don't think his muscles have developed at such a young age for it, so this is totally stress free), but he will tell me a couple times a day that he needs to go to the potty. He gives me a very serious look, says a specific phrase "ja da ja der", and taps the front of his diaper. I answer with "Oh, let's go potty!" and I take off his diaper and put him on the potty seat. He goes those times! And immediately after his nap, I put him on the potty as well if his diaper is dry.

My niece did this all the time! Finally someone suggested they have her sleep in a onesie. That worked like a charm. Also, my friend, who has 4 healthy, well adjusted children said she used to literally duct tape their diaper closed! No duct tape on their skin of course, just to keep it on. I reiterate that they are all healthy and well adjusted children!

Hope this helps!

Oh my gosh...the story of my life with my 2.5 year old twin boys. What finally worked was turning their one-piece footie pajamas inside out. The cannot get them off, so they cannot get into their diapers. My boys go in through the legs, so onesies and duct tape don't help at all. But, duct tape did at least help to keep the diaper on!

Try putting her in one-piece footie PJ's that zip up, but put them on backwards so the zipper is on her back. You'll have to just twist the feet around and she won't be able to get them off

We had this problem lots of times and none of the advice worked - she could get out of anything. Best solution for us (and I wish i'd done it WAAAAY sooner) was to get a video monitor for her room. Then, you could watch and see what she was doing and we'd rush right in if she was pulling a diaper houdini move. Best best best thing we ever did, as I said i only wished we had the video monitor a LOT earlier - we got it at about that age.

good luck!

Yes, I've been there. You'll definately find it more amusing a few years from now- lol.

A onesie undershirt usually did the trick. Some of them eventually discovered access through the leg holes though :/

I remember that I read a mom's suggestion on here once to turn a sleeper inside out before putting it on- they can't get it off that way. It sounded like a really good idea to me- but by then my youngest had already outgrown that stage so I've never tried it. I would guess that unless you have AC in the baby's room, it would be hard to do that this time of year- although today's pretty chilly here in the Berkshires. I see you're in MA too, I wouldn't guess it's much warmer where you are.
Best wishes :o)

yes, yes, yes. I am in the same stage now with my son who is two years old. A few months ago he started taking off his pants and diaper during his naps and at night time. We were fortunate enough to never have him poop while he did this but we did get a pretty soaked crib many times. I had people suggest putting duck tape around the diaper so they can't get it off. I never tried that though so I don't know. We just ended up buying onesies again and made sure he had one on during the day and one on at night if he had two piece PJ's on. This worked great! I don't know if he got frustrated that he couldn't get his diaper off any more because of the onesie or what but he rarely does it anymore. I had a hard time finding onesies that fit him because the Gerber brand runs so small but I did find an off brand at JCPenny that sold a pack of 24 month onesies and recently just found that oldnavy.com sells packs of 2T onesies which we bought as well. Hope this helps.

My kids would do the same thing. I tried all the tricks and the only thing that worked was using duct tape, tape the diaper on... LOL

Like others said, try to use onesie, but let her wear it backward, so she will not be able to open it.

Seems to me someone is ready to start potty training. I would suggest to not let her play when you hear her wake, but instead go in, get her and put her on the potty.

Oh yes my daughter would strip down any ol time. Nap time, night time it didn't matter. We used the zip up, she figured it out. We tried the onsie, yep got out of that too. Finally I just started waiting outside her door, if I heard her moving around a whole lot, I would peak back in. If she was out of it, I would scold her then put her back in one. She eventually got the idea. However last week she stripped it off and 'painted' all four walls! So gross, she got in big trouble and luckily we haven't had any repeats.

If you can't find onesies big enough, my daughter can get pants off, but she can't get the little bloomers off. You know the pants that go with dresses. That maybe worth a try. Also my daughter hasn't figured out how to undo a belt yet either. Maybe you can try belting her pants on. I got my daughters belts from Target in the girls department (not baby) and I got an XS that are small enough for her.

I used to have to duct tape my son's diaper and then eventually his shirt to his pants to keep him from playing in his diaper. Try it, it works.
