Does Your Dentist Always Try to Upsell You?

I recently went for my 6-month cleaning, and I was astounded at how persistently my dentist was trying to get me to consider Invisalign. I had braces as a child, so my teeth are in good shape. The little correction I need does not bother me. Still, he just kept pushing it and wasn't picking up on my "Yeah, with two kids in daycare, I'm not looking to spend thousands of dollars on cosmetic dentistry right now" vibe. I actually said that, too! And don't get me started on the $100+ Sonicare toothbrush he was trying to convince me I need, which he conveniently sells right there in his office.

Is this a trend in dentistry, as they're looking for new revenue streams? Or is my dentist particularly obnoxious? The other problem I have is that my insurance no longer fully covers cleanings at this office, so it feels extra irritating to be sold to as I'm sitting in the chair. If you go to a dentist in Belmont or Watertown, and this is NOT your experience, please send me your dentist's name!

Don't let them talk you into anything. They are just trying to make money!!! and would like all their patients to spend more. I would change dentists too if they made me feel that way. I don't even like to get X-rays if my teeth are not bothering me. They insist on them once a year and I insist on not getting them. It's a waist of money and a waist of unnecessary radiation.

Hi S.! This is so funny because I actually just got my Invisalign the other day, but it was something I have waited for and planned for since about 5 years ago. My bottom teeth are totally crooked and one sticks straight up and is totally obvious. I am a teacher and talk for a living and I got tired of people/kids looking at it, and of course, two kids later my teeth shifted even more that I could have imagined. That being said, my dentist never pushed it on me, ever. I always initiated the discussion and he actually encouraged me to wait being done with kids and because I needed some gum grafting done in the meantime. I'm sorry your dentist doesn't seem to be listening to you, and obviously does not understand the major expenses involved with day care and having kids!! I LOVE my dentist, and he is in Belmont at the Belmont Dental Group. I see Dr. Nager. The phone number is ###-###-####. I love everyone there, from hygienists to dentists. I have had a lot of dental work done over the past 10 years (A LOT!!) and I have always felt comfortable there. I take my kids there too (ages 2 and 4) and even though they are not pediatric dentists they are awesome with kids. They are located between Belmont High School and the Fresh Pond rotary, very easy to get to and convenient. I hope you find someone you like better... I'd call ahead and see if whoever you might go to takes your insurance and will cover cleanings.

We've been going to Watkin Osorio in Boston for 8 or 9 years and I've never had this type of experience with them. My husband's hygenist usually tells him about whitening procedures but his teth are stained and he asks about it occasionally but it's not a hard sell situation. I see Dr. Henenoya and I really like him! My husband sees Dr. Osorio and likes him too. They're in the city which isn't the most convenient and they aren't a "family" dentist but their rooms are clean, nicely updated and they are very thorough and professional.

Sounds like your dentist is just obnoxious! I have never had my dentist try to sell me anything. The only thing ever out of my dental hygienists mouth has been recommendations but no pushy sales. For example she recommended I switch to an electric tooth brush. This was followed with you can get them anywhere they all work great.
Maybe this is a great time to look for a better dentist.

I go to Michael Pellegrini in Belmont (his office is on Mott St, not sure of the phone number). His office is great, extremely professional and they never try to sell me anything. I actually do have braces, but they referred me to an orthodontist for that (and only when I asked about it)- they do not do it themselves. I am surprised your dentist is trying to push invisalign on you because it was my understanding that it was better to have an orthodontist handle any kind of treatment like that... sounds like you should get a new dentist for sure!

HI S.- I go to a dentist in Waltham, and this is not my experience with him. Sometimes I feel like he is telling me to do things to my teeth as a preventative measure -like replace an old filling because it may "leak" and get a cavity underneath-but never cosmetic things. As long as I brush correctly, floss and use a rinse he's happy. His name is Dr.Wu, and I've been going to him for about 10 years. He had just become a dentist when I started seeing him. I feel like I've gotten good care from him. So, I guess I'd find a new dentist, if I were you. Good luck!

Hi S.,

I go to Premier Dental in Watertown on Main Street. They also do pediatrics. They have amazing state of the art technology which is the reason I started going there a few years ago. It hasn't been my experience to be upsold at an appoinment. They have tried to get me to get an implant where I am missing a tooth (had a tooth pulled 10 years ago) but so has every dentist I have seen.

Good luck!
